Discount chain makes ‘Lidl’ bid to build coffee kiosks outside Limerick stores

Discount retailer Lidl Ireland is seeking planning permission to build coffee shops beside two of its stores in Limerick.

The firm has announced its intention to seek the go-ahead from Limerick City and County Council to develop the units at its outlets in Childers Road, near Ballinacurra, and Dublin Road in Castletroy.

According to a planning notice published in Limerick Leader newspaper, the “free-standing cafe kiosks” will serve take-away food and non-alcoholic beverages.

It’s not clear who will run the cafe, with Lidl Ireland not returning a request for comment from the Limerick Leader / Limerick Live.

But at its store in Dock Road – opened last year – a cafe unit is in place there, and yet to be taken up.

City East councillor Peter Doyle has welcomed the potential for coffee kiosks at Lidl stores.

“It helps to enhance the shopping experience. It will give people more choice, more places to go,” he said.
