Live – Multi-car crash at the Jack Lynch Tunnel causes rush hour traffic chaos

Traffic ground to a halt along several of Cork’s major commuter routes this evening following a multi-vehicle collision in the Jack Lynch Tunnel.

Emergency services were at the scene and Cork City Fire Brigade warned drivers to expect delays.




They said: “Crews from Ballyvolane and Anglesea Street are currently dealing with a multiple-car road traffic collision in the Jack Lynch Tunnel Southbound.

‘The right-hand lane is closed as a result, expect delays in the area.”

Incident cleared

The incident has been cleared and traffic is moving as normal through the tunnel.

Delays remain along he N25 but they are starting to clear up.

One hour update

A little over an hour since the crash was first reported conditions around the Dunkettle Interchange have seen improvement.

  • Minor delays on the approach from the N25 following another collision
  • Traffic approaching from the M8 is still experiencing delays, although they are not as far reaching
  • Heavy traffic remains on the Lower Glanmire Road closer to the city
  • Traffic moving northbound along the M8 remains unaffected

Further delays due to Crash on the N25

Commuters are reporting further delays on the N25 following a third collision on the N25 approaching Cork.

Gardaí are understood to be at the scene of the second collision on the L2998 earlier this evening.

Delays are still heavy on all roads approaching the Dunkettle short of the N40 northbound.

Worst affected

The Lower Glanmire Road is experiencing the worst of the delays this evening with heavy traffic stretching from the Dunkettle to the city centre.

Second Crash

There has been a second crash in the area along the L2998 which will see traffic slowed heading to and from Little Island.

Traffic update

The Jack Lynch Tunnel crash is causing major delays across the Dunkettle today.

Queues on the M8 Southbound are now stretching as far back as Glyntown near Glanmire. The tailback on the N25 Westbound has just passed the Little Island train station and is still growing.

Traffic on all roads impacted is moving very slowly. The right southbound lane in the tunnel has been closed, but the left lane remains open.

Delay times

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (the TII) is reporting travel times of up to 21 minutes for drivers heading from Dunkettle to the Bloomfield Interchange.

There will be substantial delays along the following routes as the crash is dealt with

  • M8
  • N25
  • Lower Glanmire Road
  • Glanmire Road

Traffic is moving well on the northbound side.

Major delays are expected on all approaches north of the tunnel.
