John Moran to be inaugurated as Mayor of Limerick

The inauguration of the first ever directly elected Mayor of Limerick takes place at St Mary’s Cathedral in the city this morning.

Following his historic election, John Moran will receive Limerick’s mayoral chain during a formal ceremony in front of invited guests, which gets under way at 11.30am.

The Mayor of Limerick has extended an invitation to the public to join in the celebrations with festivities at Merchant’s Quay following the inauguration ceremony.

“The people of Limerick voted to make me Ireland’s first directly elected mayor and I am answerable to them,” said Mayor John Moran. “It is fitting that the public have an opportunity to join in the celebrations as I officially take up the chains of office.

“Come and spend some time with me on inauguration day as we embark on this historic journey together,” he said.

The first meeting of the newly elected council will take place at the Council Chambers in Dooradoyle at 3pm following the inauguration.

Limerick’s 40 elected councillors, including ten newly elected councillors, will meet for the first time since the local elections took place on 7 June.

The direct election of a Mayor of Limerick with executive powers has created a unique dynamic in local government in Ireland.

Mayor Moran said he believes Limerick can rival any region in Europe.

“I am looking forward to working with the elected councillors and the council executive over the next five years, to deliver a more liveable, ambitious and prosperous Limerick,” he said.
