Wayne Rooney has revealed one of his four sons wrote off a £3,000 golf cart by crashing it into a lake on his property.

Rooney and his family moved into a six-bedroom mansion in December 2021, with the Manchester United legend having two man-made fishing lakes built on the 40 acres of land that surround the property.

He also splashed out on a golf cart for his family to travel around the estate, but revealed in an interview with Gary Neville on The Overlap that one of his children has since driven it into one of the lakes.

With the interview filmed at Rooney’s residence, Neville asked: “Do you go swimming in that lake?” To which Rooney replied: “I wouldn’t. We’ve had a golf buggy go in it. The day I’ve gone to America as manager.

“I went to the airport and one of the kids, straight in.” Rooney spent 15 months in charge of MLS side D.C. United, having been appointed in July 2022 after previously spending two seasons at the club as a player.

After leaving D.C. at the end of the 2023 season, Rooney returned to English football for an ill-fated spell in charge of Birmingham City which lasted just 83 days. Birmingham were sixth in the Championship when he replaced Eustace, but had slipped to 20th by the time he was sacked.

Rooney won just two of his 15 matches in charge and Birmingham were ultimately relegated to League One. However, the former striker is now preparing for his fourth managerial role at Plymouth Argle.
