Rassie Erasmus forced to delay naming South Africa squad to face Ireland as Boks are left stranded in London

The Springboks warmed up for the summer series with Ireland by easily beating Wales 41-13 at Twickenham on Saturday afternoon, and while they were due to fly to Johannesburg on Sunday evening, Rassie Erasmus’ men had to adjust their travel plans and spend an extra night in the English capital.

The squad will return home later on Monday and touch down in Johannesburg in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

As a result, Springbok boss Erasmus will announce his squad for the games against Ireland and the Rugby Championship on Tuesday.

Despite not being at their best, the Boks had far too much quality for Wales as they geared up for the first Test against Ireland in Pretoria on July 7 with a straightforward victory that left plenty of room for improvement.

“It wasn’t a perfect performance,” said Erasmus.

“We made a few errors and there were things that didn’t click, but there were others that did, so it was a good start.

“We have new coaches and had a few players making their debuts, so there were areas of the game that were not as good as we would have liked it to be, but there was certainly no lack of effort and intensity, and we realise it will take time for things to come together nicely.

“The important thing is that we achieved our goal and the players who made their debuts showed that they are capable of playing at this level.

“It was a tough match, as it always is against Wales. I thought our scrums went well, but we didn’t dominate the collisions. We also conceded a try, but we scored five and we could have scored more, but those are things we need to work on going forward.

“It was a beneficial game for us because some players were not eligible for selection and a guy like Jasper Wiese is still out [suspended], while some of the Japanese players haven’t played in a while. But the young guys stepped up to the plate and played really well.”

Meanwhile, Ireland will ramp up preparations in camp in Dublin today ahead of their departure to Johannesburg on Wednesday. Andy Farrell’s men are then due to train in South Africa for the first time on Friday.

Ireland will hold a press conference on Monday when a squad update is expected to be provided by a member of the coaching staff.
