Willie Mullins sells three horses including gelding tipped for Cheltenham
Willie Mullins sold three horses on an online auction on Tuesday for a total of over €50,000, including one tipped for a Cheltenham Festival target.
The Closutton maestro has started using ThoroughBid, an online bloodstock auction house, to sell some of his horses in recent years.
And there were some potential bargains to be had in ThoroughBid’s June Sale. The top lot was What Path, who won two times over hurdles for Mullins and now looks set for a chasing career.

The seven-year-old gelding was sold to bloodstock agent and former jockey Jerry McGrath for £27,000 (€32,000). Stablemates We’llhavewan (£11,000) and Cadoudal Saint (£9,000) also sold well for Team Mullins.
Commenting on the sale, Willie’s son Patrick Mullins said: “We were delighted to get all horses sold today, particularly at prices that I should think both vendors and buyers would be happy with.
“What Path has a lot of potential going forward as a chaser, while Cadoudal Saint has youth on his side and could win plenty of races, but I think We’llhavewan might be the best value buy. He’s the sort of horse that could easily be competitive in some of those valuable staying chases and maybe get to Cheltenham as a Pertemps horse.
Closutton has sold seven horses with the online auction and Patrick went on to praise the pioneering platform: “ThoroughBid is a very hassle-free and effective way for people to sell their horses., and Patrick praised the pioneering platform: “We’ve hwonad very positive experience from it and expect to be supporting it in the future as well.”
ThoroughBid’s CEO James Richardson said: “We’re pleased to have sold a further three horses for the Mullins team. Their horses often prove popular for people looking for a good calibre of horse-in-training, while Willie and Patrick seem happy with how easy it is to sell online. As has been the case with previous Mullins horses to have gone through our online ring, these three can hopefully do a good job for their new connections.
“We saw a really good flurry of bidding from across the globe today, with bidders tuning in from the United States, Asia and all across Europe, and look forward to offering another interesting catalogue for our July Sale on Wednesday 31st, for which entries are now open.”
It remains to be seen if the trainers of these newly-bought horses will be able to bring out more improvement in them than Mullins and his team could.
There have been some exceptions, though, including Skyace, for whom Shark Hanlon paid £600 after placing in three bumpers for Mullins.
The mare went on to win five races for Hanlon, including the Grade 1 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse.
