Galway charity replies to closure claims as fears vital service will shut down

A Galway charity has replied to claims of closure this week as fears grow over the loss of a ‘vital’ service in the west.

Concerns have surrounded the future of mental health charity Pieta’s branch in Tuam after reports that they could be shutting down operations in the area.




Rumours circulated this week with locals voicing their distress over the possible closure of the branch, which has been described as a ‘vital’ source for the community.

Tuam-born businessman John Concannon expressed his devastation over the rumours of closure on Galway Bay FM’s Galway Talks on Tuesday as he highlighted the importance of the centre to the community.

He said: “This is not an institution – it’s private, its secluded. People need this service and are entitled to this service. It’s a service specifically designed for the job it has to do.”

He added: “We can’t take this lying down.”
