Pride disco postponed due to ‘threats and safety concerns’
A Wicklow Pride disco has been postponed due to “threats and safety concerns” from some local residents in Newtownmountkennedy.
The disco, set to happen on Sunday, was advertised as “an LGBTQ+Ally disco for teens aged 13-16”. The announcement was made on the community’s Facebook page, stating that the decision was made because of the safety concerns of the community, especially their younger members – after they received threats of protests from some residents of Newtownmountkennedy, whilst enduring “malicious” accusations of being “paedophiles and groomers”.
They said: “These baseless attacks are deeply troubling.” The post said that one of their community members received a note with the same remarks in their letterbox.

They continued: “These actions underscore the very reason we need Pride. We stand against hate, bigotry, and ignorance.”
Wicklow Pride has appealed to the public to stand with them “and show young members of the LGBTQ+ community that they are accepted and loved for who they are.” They said that the public can do this by joining the Pride Parade on July 6th.
They have also urged businesses in Newtownmountkennedy to show their support by dressing their windows with a Pride flag or pride colours.
