Can playing from the forward tees make you a better golfer? Maybe.

That’s the argument put forward in a Golf Digest article. And it’s an argument supported by the 2024 U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, who is quoted in the article as saying, “It’s probably the best thing you can do when leaning how to score.” When the article’s author tried it, he found that playing from the forward tees doesn’t necessarily make the game easier, but it does challenge a player to be better in ways they “probably overlook.”

Ironwood Golf Club

In the Two Man Summer Solstice Team Competition held Tuesday, June 18, Shane Mudge and Kurt Van Osch recorded a stunning seven-under-par 29 on Ironwood’s back nine holes. But it was the team of Brad Henderson and Travis Fansett that won the A Flight with an eighteen hole score of 63.

Jared Thompson and Dan Allen won the B Flight with a score of 65, and Andy Orr and Paul Gorman won the C Flight with a 71.

In Senior Men’s League play, the teams of David Holtzmann, Don Gifford, Jonathan Maurice and John DePass, and Brian Hartwick, Bill Godwin, Kevin McArter and Charles Chambers each recorded the lowest team scores at 159.

White Squirrel Golf Club

Closest-to-the-hole honours went to Larry Witting and Brian Blackburn during the Senior Men’s League event Tuesday, June 18.

Nellie Dekoker had the fewest putts when the Wednesday Ladies’ League played on Wednesday, June 19. When the Thursday Ladies’ League played on Thursday, June 20, Cindy O’Brien had the longest drive and Nancy Avery won the closest-to-the-hole competition.

Of the 27 foursomes that participated in the Senior Men’s League’s Yellow Ball competition on Monday, June 24, 11 foursomes managed to lose their yellow ball before finishing their round. Forty players from the sixteen foursomes that didn’t lose their yellow ball played well enough to win individual prizes. Luke Momersteeg sank the longest putt and Paul Seeley won the closest-to-the-hole competition.

Oakwood Resort Golf Club

Randy Mason on #4, Norm Middaugh on #7 and Dan Labelle on #9 all recoded birdies during the Thursday, June 20, Men’s League event.

In the A Flight, Norm Middaugh had the lowest gross score with a nine-hole total of 34, followed by Jeff Liley and Terry Jarvis with matching 36s. In the B Flight Larry Marchand had the lowest gross score with a 35, followed by Peter Haist with a 38.

Terry Jarvis was closest to the hole on #1, and on #4 it was Randy Mason. Peter Haist was the loonie bin winner.

Exeter Golf Club

Ron Pickering of the D Flight recorded an amazing nine under par net score of 27 during the Senior Men’s League event on Thursday, June 20. Other Low Net scores: A Flight, John Hammond 33; B Flight, Dan Clayton 29; C Flight, Dave Prouty 34. Rob Robicheau, and John Hammond won the closest-to-the-hole competition.

The Men’s League event on Monday, June 24, was sponsored by Mark Hartman and Edward Jones Financial. Sean Taylor had the low gross score among A Flight players with a one over par 37. David Atthill was the A Flight’s low net player with a 33. Andrew Hodgert shot a two over par score of 38 to win the low gross prize in the B Flight. Brent Dawson’s 33 was good enough for low net in the B Flight.

In the C Flight, Jeff Foster had the low gross score with a 42. Brett Bowerman was low net with a 32. Rob Morrissey’s 48 was good enough to win low gross honours in the D Flight and David Robinson was low net with a 37.

Kevin Mann and Steve Cooper took the closest-to-the-pin awards.
