Car crashes through wall of Northside church car park

A section of wall outside a church on the Northside of Cork city has been cordoned off following a collision today.

The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning at the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Anne in Shandon. Locals told CorkBeo that a car arriving in the area got out of control and crashed into the interior of the car park wall.

It’s believed nobody was injured in the incident and Gardaí arrived on the scene shortly afterwards to cordon off the area. A temporary railing is being installed at the scene this evening and repair works are expected to start in the coming days.

The yellow tape was a strange sight for many locals heading in for 10am mass this morning – and one neighbouring takeaway had a gas response after seeing the damage. The team at the Golden Wok restaurant – just across the road – posted a picture of the wall on social media, adding: “Slow down guys. There’s enough for everyone.”

This incident comes one month after the crash that damaged the historic Parliament Bridge in the city centre. Two people were injured during the incident, and a portion of the structure of the bridge – which connects George’s Quay to South Mall – was knocked into the water by the impact.

Cork City Council have recently installed new fencing in the area and it’s believed workers will try to recover pieces of the broken stone from the Lee in the coming weeks.
