Singer Don Mescall says partner Morah Ryan understands life in the spotlight
“”Our ability to laugh, the majority of the time at each other, I think that’s wonderful because life is so fragile, life is so short and we take ourselves way too seriously”
The mum-of-five has been in a relationship with the singer/songwriter since 2019. However they are rarely seen in public together.
The pair began dating after meeting at an after-party in Dublin, where Don was singing.
The musician recently revealed on a podcast that Morah has a very good sense of humour and allows him be himself.
“Our ability to laugh, the majority of the time at each other, I think that’s wonderful because life is so fragile, life is so short and we take ourselves way too seriously,” he said.
Speaking to Mary McAleese and Mary Kennedy on Changing Times: The Allenwood Conversations, Don added that Morah understands the music world.
“With Morah, because she had an understanding of the entertainment business, having been married to Gerry Ryan, she knew how it worked.
“So the pressure I would have felt in my previous relationship, of being away from that person or the things that you have to do, she’d understand and she’d go, ‘I know what he’s doing, he’s got to do that’.
“That’s one of those things that right from the get go I noticed, she’s been here before.
“We just make each other laugh a lot and I find her very, very easy to be around. I can be totally myself, I don’t have to be trying (sic) to be anybody else.
“I’m just me and she seems to like me! I still try to figure out why, but she really genuinely does. She thinks I’m great. She’s great,” Don said.
The hit-maker added that being creative means he can lose track of his personal life.
“Getting to know Morah and this wonderful relationship I’m in for the last four years, I have to keep a check on myself.
“When I’m in the studio, time disappears. I’m happy at three o’clock in the morning to be working on a song or working on a mix or whatever, but that’s not going to be fair on the other person in the relationship.”
Don also spoke about his relationship with his daughter Eve and his ex-wife Davina.
“She [Davina] changed my life,” he said. “We’re great buddies, absolutely. Sure why wouldn’t you be? We were together for 15 years, she’s a huge part of my life.”
He said his daughter Eve was the “best thing that ever happened in his life”.
“That was good for me, because being a singer-songwriter musician, you don’t plan for this but you have to become quite selfish,” said Don. “Davina was still training to be a nurse so I would look after Eve all day everyday. That connection with her can never be broken.
“She’s 25 now, we speak everyday – several times a day.”
Previously, Morah’s son Rex spoke praised her for having the “courage” to go public with a partner “later in life”.
“It takes great courage to come out with a new partner later in life because there’s always the danger of it not going to plan.
“It’s a risk saying I am committing to this person in public. But I’m glad mum choose Don because I get on with him, and I’m really happy for her. He’s a very talented guy who I’ve welcomed into my own theatre to play a gig.”
