Superb Walsh claims tie for third place in Switzerland
Ireland’s Lauren Walsh produced a superb performance at the Swiss Ladies Open to claim a tie for third place, agonisingly missing out on a maiden tour victory.
Alice Hewson ultimately took the title after a play-off against Tvesa Malik, winning it on the first play-off hole with a birdie. Walsh began the day five off leader Fatima Fernandez, who she would end the day alongside in third spot.
The 23-year-old Kildare woman proceeded to shoot a sensational seven-under-par 64 to surge to the top of the standings and it looked like she might be heading for a first triumph on the European Tour.
But she heartbreakingly slipped off the summit as Malik picked up three birdies and an eagle to force a play-off alongside Englishwoman Hewson, who also picked up three strokes on her last two holes.
Walsh turned pro last year not long after helping Wake Forest University to win their first ever NCAA Women’s Golf Championship in Arizona.
She will take part in this August’s KPMG Women’s Irish Open at Carton House.
