Adrigole are Division 5 Cork County Football League winners, beating Buttevant in the final by a point

Adrigole 2-8 

Buttevant 0-13 

Adrigole took the McCarthy Insurances Division 5 Cork County Football League title at Kilmurry, beating Buttevant in a very close final that could have gone either way.

Heavy rain at the start of the game made for slippy conditions. 

Buttevant started brightly with early points from David Hanlon with two frees. 

Liam Harrington made a vital block from Conor Hanlon. 

Jason Harrington opened the Beara sides account in the 13th minute. 

David Hanlon had the Avondhu sides third point. 

At the end of the first quarter, good play by David Harrington led to a great goal by Jason Harrington. 

Further pressure saw Adrigole add a few good points. 

Mark Lenahan pointed from the mark to leave it 1-4 to 0-4. 

Impressive Seamus Madigan soloed up field and pointed. 

Niall O’Riordan pointed for Buttevant following good play by Seamus Madigan and Paddy Behan.

In the 28th minute, John O’Neill, and David Hanlon worked well to put Mark Lenahan through only to be denied by a great save by William O’Sullivan. 

The ball broke down the field with Jason Harrington finding Ben O’Sullivan, who had only been on the field 15 seconds, and he scored a vital goal. At the break Adrigole led 2-4 to 0-6 and were in control of the game.

Buttevant did well on the resumption. 

They were prominent in the half backline and David Hanlon excelled in midfield. 

They had two pointed frees by Conor Hanlon with David Hanlon (free) making it now 2-4 to 0-9 after 37 minutes and it was game on. 

Jason Harrington had the Beara side’s first score of the second half in the 40th minute. 

Both sides were off target with several chances. 

Eventually, Mark Lenahan soloed through and pointed. 

Conor Hanlon levelled the game at 2-5 to 0-11. 

The momentum now seemed to be with Buttevant. 

David Hanlon landed a lead pointed free at the end of the third quarter. 

David Harrington levelled from a free in the 52nd minute. 

In the 59th minute, David Harrington landed a fine point. 

Good play by Kevin Lenahan, Aaron Trimm and Conor Hanlon led to massive point by Seamus Madigan. 

Extra time looked very likely. 

Deep in injury time Adrigole’s Cathal O’Sullivan worked well for David Harrington to score his fifth point and that was followed by the final whistle. 

After the game, Donal McSweeney, Cultural Officer Cork County Board presented the cup to the winning captain Liam Harrington.
