Airport warning to Brits heading abroad as millions told to plan carefully

A WARNING has been issued to Brits travelling abroad next month as passengers face missing their flights.

Parts of the M56 between junction five and six by Manchester Airport will be closed overnight in June and July for resurfacing.

The “important wear and tear work” will take place between 9pm and 5am on weekdays and ends at 7am on weekends.

The work involves resurfacing slip roads as well as replacing road markings and bridge joints, said National Highways.

Drivers heading to the airport have been warned they may need to “leave a little bit of extra time to get to work or check-in for flights”.

National Highways project manager, Rob Williams, said: “This is important, if routine, wear and tear work.

“We are aiming to be well out of the way before the start of the school summer holiday period.

“We’re working closely with the airport to ensure they are aware of our timetable and a small number of overnight closures which will mean drivers needing to leave a little bit of extra time to get to work or check-in for flights.”

Overnight roadworks

Work to lay the new surface will begin on June 10 between junction five at the airport and junction six at Hale Barns.

The entire eastbound carriageway, between junction six and junction four, will shut overnight on June 11 and 12 and again between July 8 and 10.

Later that month, the eastbound road between junction seven and junction five will shut between June 24 and 26 and on July 4 and 5.

Often described as the North Cheshire Motorway the M56 is 34 miles in length and spans the stretch from Greater Manchester to Chester.

Construction began in 1968, but the road wasn’t fully built until its grand opening in 1981.

The M56 corridor is used daily by commuters travelling from North Wales and Cheshire into Manchester, which gets very busy especially during peak times.
