All About Cork: Community reaps a reward from nearby concert series

The return of the annual concert series to Virgin Media Park, formerly known as Musgrave Park, in Turner’s Cross reaps huge economic benefits to the local area and are welcome, according to the former Lord Mayor of Cork Mick Finn.

The former Cllr Finn said the interaction between the promoters and local residents is now really well established and that people look forward to the events.

He also highlighted the talent that will be performing at the venue, and the positive relationship between promoters MCD and the local community.

“Having the likes of Shania Twain, Take That, Sting and the Wolfe Tones on our doorsteps is just fantastic and I know that people are looking forward to the 2024 series at Musgrave Park,” said Mr Finn.

“I have found the promoters, MCD, to be very responsive to local needs and the event plan that is there now has been informed by residents over the years and has ironed out some of the issues that were prevalent in the first year, long may this continue.”

Mr Finn urged those attending the concerts to respect the area in terms of parking and behaviour and help ensure that this annual event will continue long into the future.

Ballyphehane Tidy Towns also welcomed the concert series to the area, with their very own banner outside the venue itself.

A spokesperson for the group said: “We hope everyone enjoys the festivities, we will have extra bins around Ballyphehane, so please dispose of your litter correctly.

“Our litter patrol volunteers will be on duty both outside and inside the venue for each concert.”

Drama pilot project for students

The Presentation Secondary School, Ballyphehane has announced that it has been chosen to deliver a new pilot project for students interested in drama, film and theatre.

In a statement, the secondary school said:

“We are delighted to announce that we have been chosen as one of very few pilot schools to introduce Drama, Film & Theatre Studies as a new Leaving Certificate examinable subject.

“We have a deep-rooted history of the arts in our school and are thrilled to allow our students have the opportunity to use their skills to gain points in the Leaving Cert!”

More than €500 has been raised for the new roof at Ballyphehane Community Centre. The centre has asked members of the community to sponsor a tile for just €10.

A spokesperson for the centre said: “You can make a difference by donating today to Ballyphehane Community Centre!

“We need you to sponsor a tile to improve our sports hall roof. It will cost over €290,000 in total.

“We are asking for just €10 per person! Each sponsor will be acknowledged, with their name inside the community centre and online.

Former Lord Mayor Mick Finn thanks community for support

After 15 years representing the Cork South Central Local Electoral Area, former Independent councillor Mick Finn has thanked all of those who supported him over his three council terms. Elected Lord Mayor in 2018, Mr Finn decided not to run at the elections earlier this month. “I would firstly like to congratulate the six new councillors for the LEA — Shane O’Callaghan, Séan Martin, Fiona Kerins, Pádraig Rice, Paudie Dineen and Dan Boyle — and wish them well for the five years ahead.

“I know the level of work required is huge so good luck to them in facing the challenges that will present.”

Mr Finn expressed his gratitude to the people of Greenmount, Ballyphehane, Turner’s Cross, Togher and beyond for their support during his tenure. “I was truly honoured to represent the area on the city council and thank all those whom I met, especially the volunteer and community groups, for their support and their selfless work.” Mr Finn said he may dip his toe into the political arena again.

“I’ll take a few weeks off and will decide on a Dáil run over the summer.”

Student welcome at City Hall

Pupils from Togher Togher Girls’ National School were recently welcomed to Cork City Hall by Lord Mayor of Cork, councillor Kieran McCarthy. The school choir even put on a performance for the Lord Mayor. In a statement, the local primary school thanked Mr McCarthy for extending an invitation to the local pupils to visit City Hall. “It was an honour for our choir to perform for you,” the school added.

New councillors welcomed

Ballyphehane Togher Community Development Project (CDP) has congratulated incoming local members of Cork City Council.

The organisation also said it is looking forward to working with the newly elected local councillors, Shane O’Callaghan, Séan Martin, Fiona Kerins, Pádraig Rice, Paudie Dineen and Dan Boyle.

In a statement, Ballyphehane Togher CDP said: “Comhghairdeas mór to all our newly elected city councillors — beir bua in the work ahead! Ballyphehane Togher CDP, covering Cork South Central and Cork South West, has a special remit in these areas and we look forward to working collaboratively with all the councillors in our local wards, across all parties and none.

Even though we’ve a small base, we’ve a wide reach and our catchment area has gradually stretched into Cork South East but also right across the city through our interagency involvement in many city wide programmes and initiative.

So, we’re delighted to see so many great community representatives re-elected and excitingly some first time candidates joining the council chamber.

“Sadly too, we’re sorry to lose some good community allies who didn’t make it through this time, and especially some fantastic women,” the CDP added. “The city owes you all much — thanks for your service, which we’ve no doubt you’ll continue! All those who ran in the local elections deserve great credit. To all of you who voted, well done too, you’re an essential part of how democracy works!”7
