Archie Gray’s iconic shirt number as he completes Tottenham transfer
Archie Gray has completed his move to Tottenham Hotspur and will wear the iconic number 14 shirt for the club.
On Tuesday, Spurs announced the transfer that will cost the club over £25million plus Joe Rodon heading in the opposite direction in a package worth around £40million, which met the threshold for a clause within Gray’s contract after Leeds failed to get promotion last season.
Gray has signed a six-year deal with the north London club and will wear the number 14 shirt for the coming season, a number made famous by the likes of David Ginola, Luka Modric and worn in recent years by Rodon and Ivan Perisic. He becomes Tottenham’s third summer arrival so far after Lucas Bergvall, who signed from Djurgarden in February ahead of a July 1 arrival, and Timo Werner, who had his loan move from RB Leipzig extended to the end of this coming season.
Tottenham jumped into the fold for Gray when his advanced move to Brentford collapsed as the Bees could not agree terms on the payment structure for their deal worth up to £40million.
Gray has a real family footballing dynasty at Leeds with his father Andy, grandfather Frank and great uncle Eddie all playing for the Yorkshire club. The teenager has played through the age groups for England and made his first appearances for the U21s earlier this year in the European Championship qualifying victories against Azerbaijan and Luxembourg, with a goal on his debut in the first match.
Rodon has joined Leeds on a four-year deal after rejecting Premier League interest from Ipswich, Leicester and Brentford to go back to the Championship club after a season the Wales international relished despite his difficult end in the play-off final defeat to Southampton at Wembley.
