Armed gardai search Galway areas as well known crime gangs stung for near €1m

Gardai in Galway has carried out a major sting operation across two areas that has resulted in the seizure of multiple vehicles and nearly one million euros in assets.

As part of an operation targeting organized crime in the county, several premises were searched by garda units on Monday, July 8.

Properties in Tuam and Moycullen were raided by Gardaí attached to Galway Divisional Crime, Galway Drugs Unit, Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Armed Support Unit and the Garda Dog Unit. Almost €1 million was frozen from two bank accounts, with one outside the jurisdiction. Several vehicles and up to 12 designer watches and other expensive items were seized during the raids.

€75,000 in cash and three vehicles (Tiguan jeep, Audi A5 car & a Ford Transit van) were seized during the raids.

The two seized bank accounts frozen under the money laundering legislation had cryptocurrency and cash worth almost €1 million. One account had €530,000 worth of crypto currency and the second held €465,000 cash.

No arrests have been made at this time but investigations into the crime network in these areas are ongoing.

In a statement to Galway Beo, a garda spokesperson gave the latest information on the raids: “As part of an operation targeting organized criminal activity in the Galway Division, Gardaí carried out searches at a number of premises on Monday 8th July 2024.”

“The searches were conducted at properties in Tuam and in Moycullen by Gardaí attached to Galway Divisional Crime, Galway Drugs Unit, Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Armed Support Unit and the Garda Dog Unit.”

“During the course of these searches €75,000 cash, 3 vehicles (Tiguan jeep, Audi A5 car & a Ford Transit van) as well as a large amount of high value goods including 12 designer watches & multiple electronic devices were seized.”

“Two bank accounts, both within and outside this jurisdiction, with cash and cryptocurrency valued in excess of €990,000 were frozen under Money Laundering legislation. One of these accounts held €530,000 worth of crypto currency and the second held €465,000 cash.”

“No arrests have been made at this time.The operation focused on disrupting and dismantling organised criminal groups within the Galway Division remains ongoing.”
