Beloved RTE show vanishes off air in just DAYS in summer shake-up

ANOTHER BELOVED RTE show is finishing up for summer in a matter of DAYS and fans are set to be gutted.

Today, hosted by Maura Derrane and Daithi O Se, has been entertaining the nation for the past nine months.

The popular chat show airs every Monday to Friday at 3.30pm.

However, the series will be wrapping up for its annual summer as they sign off on Friday, May 31.

The jam-packed season was filled with new hosts as Sinead Kennedy left for maternity leave in November 2023.

Maura, who usually presents the show every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, fronted for the entire week until Christmas, before going back to her usual schedule.

At the beginning of this year, guest presenters began to host alongside Daithi on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The Kerry native recently opened up about the busy season as he told RSVP Magazine: “It’s going really well. There’s always a worry that the audience at home only likes seeing the same people every day.

“We tried this out before, on Sinead’s first maternity leave, and it worked really well. We’ve had Laura Woods, Lorraine Keane, Ciara Revins, Meghann Scully, James Patrice, Tracy Clifford and Elaine Kinsella in studio and they’ve all been great.

“They fitted in well. The viewing figures have been very high. Of course I’m still presenting with Maura Derrane for half the week as well.”

And Sinead Kennedy, who gave birth to her beautiful baby boy last November, is expected to make a welcomed return in September.

The 40-year-old said: “I look forward to coming back to my job. Keep the seat warm for me because I’m not going anywhere!”

Patrick Kielty also bid an emotional farewell to viewers earlier this month after his first season in the host seat as the Late Late Show host.

The Down comic was close to tears as he wrapped up his first stint at the helm of the iconic show on Friday May 10.

The broadcaster, who last year signed a three-season deal to take over after Ryan Tubridy‘s departure, will be off air for four months until the next season in September.

RTE has been showing a variety of films throughout the summer at 9.35pm in the Late Late’s usual slot on Friday night.

SHORTT STINT

While Songs of Ireland with popular duo Pat Shortt and Stockton’s Wing frontman Mike Hanrahan disappeared off screens last week.

The new four part series saw the pair taking a musical road-trip around Ireland to uncover the history and significance of the country’s most popular songs.

The show combined the importance of Irish music, unique Irish culture, and the camaraderie between musicians.

In each episode, Pat and Mike traveled through the picturesque landscapes of Ireland and uncovering the history and significance behind some of the nation’s most beloved songs.

Joining forces with both new and established local musicians in each county, Pat and Mike then put their own twist on the well-known Irish songs as they performed in local venues across the country.

The last episode of the series aired last Saturday, May 25 and fans are crying out for more.

NO SUMMER TELLY LOVIN’

By Georgia Walsh, Deputy Showbiz Editor

AND with that, another popular Irish TV show disappears off screens.

The RTE summer schedule leaves a lot to be desired for TV fans, who have been left to catch up on repeats and movies while most of our popular shows take a summer break.

The Late Late Show won’t be back in action until at least September, with films taking its place in the Friday night slot.

And now Songs of Ireland has wrapped, more movies are slated to fill in the Saturday night lineup.

And while Fair City episodes are continuing over the summer – production is not, with enough filming in the can to halt production for several weeks as part of cost-cutting measures.

Telly faithful will be hoping for the introduction of a few exciting new Irish shows over the summer, and if not, we’ll have to wait to see what RTE offers in its autumn schedule offering.

Thankfully for Virgin Media viewers, Love Island begins on Monday June 3.

Fans can avail of their “long hot summer” telly fix nightly on Virgin Media Two and Virgin Media Player from 9pm each day.
