Golf shoes are probably one of the most under-rated items in terms of importance. It’s easy to overlook just how essential shoes are in order to be able to play our best golf. Think about it, our feet are the only point of contact we have with the ground as we make our swing. Therefore, it’s vital that we find a pair of golf shoes that not only provide comfort, but stability and grip as we tackle the golf course.
So performance is paramount, but for most of us looks are vital too. Almost certainly, if you don’t like how shoes look it won’t matter how comfortable they are or what kind of exceptional performance they offer. If they’re ugly then most golfer won’t wear them. It’s the same as with our day-to-day sneakers, they are a fashion statement and provide us with an opportunity to stand out on the golf course. Even if you aren’t looking to stand out, you will want something that you feel good about wearing. It’s also important to decide what kind of shoes are required. Depending on the type of course you play on and the usual weather conditions, you’ll need to decide between spiked or spikeless shoes, as both will perform differently and are suited to specific types of conditions.
Spiked models can be worn all year round but are more suited to winter, given that the conditions underfoot are more slippery and more grip is needed. Spikeless, on the other hand, are more suited to summer when grip is less essential. In many cases, spikeless shoes can be worn off the course as well and some current models are based on sports like running and basketball.

So deciding on a pair of golf shoes can be tricky. They need to look good but you also probably want a pair of the most comfortable golf shoes or a pair that needs to be waterproof. Some individuals might have wide feet and find it difficult finding shoes that are comfortable. Some manufacturers cater to that need better than others. Speaking of manufacturers, there are more of them than ever currently and the choice available is vast. Spikeless Models
Best Spikeless Golf Shoe 2024
The new Drive Pro SL has been redesigned with extensive help from world-renowned Biomechanist, JJ Rivet, as well as the brand’s most high profile Tour player Jordan Spieth. We had to wait two years for the update to this model but, based on our testing, we would say it was definitely worth the wait!
In terms of the technology, there have been some pretty significant changes made. The main tech story is an all encompassing Swing Support System which covers everything from traction and the HOVR midsole, all the way up to a new lacing system. There is also a new hybrid outsole which provides a firmer feel, plus a redesigned nub system that sees a range of different height nubs to provide more grip and ground penetration.
It didn’t take us long in testing to discover that these are amongst the best spikeless shoes on the market. At just 12oz they are one of the more lightweight offerings out there, while the new grip was more than ample for a spikeless shoe. Overall we have to say that the performance was faultless, as the new Swing Support System kept our foot firmly planted on the ground while providing support in the key areas. The overall performance was so impressive that our tester said: “It’s a sensation I’ve felt in few spikeless golf shoes like it.”
Best Outsole
It’s hard to believe that it was eight years ago when FootJoy introduced the first Pro/SL golf shoe to the market. The iconic look has certainly stood the test of time and each release adds something extra. The Pro/SLX Carbon is a fantastic looking shoe with a modern styling enhanced by new flashes of tech and color to provide a fresh, modern and premium look which we absolutely love.
Retaining all of the reliable technology associated with Footjoy, this shoe also features an improved spikeless outsole, which boasts a moulded 3D X-Wing for added stability. In testing we noted how the carbon fiber construction redistributes energy to the perimeter of the golf shoe to provide extra grip where we needed it most.
The comfort was off the charts as FootJoy have once again utilised the superb Ortholite Impressions FitBed that we saw on the HyperFlex Carbon from 2023. Overall, the comfort on offer is exceptional and while this shoe is quite different to most other spikeless models, we couldn’t have been more impressed.
Most Comfortable
The Ecco LT1 is unquestionably one of the most comfortable golf shoes on the market thanks to the combination of Ecco’s new midsole foam (called Ltyr) and the Fuildform technology which is designed to provide exceptional cushioning. You can really feel that technology at work when you wear these shoes.
In testing, the cushioning felt superb and it made walking the course an absolute breeze. We also enjoyed the seriously lightweight design which further aided the comfort and made walking an effortless experience. If we are nitpicking, then we could say that when it comes to grip and traction there are better models in this guide. That’s not to say the LT1 is lacking in that department, it’s solid if not spectacular and it will perform well in dry and slightly damp conditions. When it gets properly wet though you would be better off going for one of the spiked models below.
The looks might split opinion as while our tester wasn’t really blown away by it, this is a subjective point as other Golf Monthly team members absolutely loved the aesthetics of this shoe. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. All in all though, we think the LT1 definitely delivers on the brand’s claims of setting the bar for lightness and comfort in a shoe.
Best Looking
If the LT1 shoe above split opinion when it comes to looks, there was no such issue when it came to the Gallivan2r, which is unanimously one of the best looking golf shoes we have seen in the past decade! This shoe blends everything that’s great about the classic design of the G/FORE Gallivanter with the sportiness of the G/FORE MG4+ to spawn an immediate classic. This shoe is so beautiful we almost felt guilty putting them on and soiling them by going out on the course.
There’s an awful lot to like about this shoe other than just the stunning aesthetic though. Ample comfort comes from from a dimpled insole and 3D molded heel cup which helped keep our foot in place when swinging the club on the course, whilst the padding around the heel area meant there were no signs of rubbing, which is always important as blisters are a sure fire way to ruin a round of golf.
Where we think this model sets itself up to be unique though is with the outsole. It has an integrated rubber cleat system, featuring 13 on each shoe, all of which are set at the same height. We would say that they certainly provided a decent amount of grip, but there are defnitely more grippier models on the market. None that look this good mind. Finally, it’s worth pointing out that the brand have opted for TPU upper materials rather than the full grain leather we see on some of the best G/Fore golf shoes, so consequently the Gallivan2r is fully waterproof.
Best Value
Hybrid shoes are becoming all the rage in modern golf and for 2024, adidas has introduced another shoe into its crossover category, offer golfers a fabulous looking sneaker style golf shoe that can be worn on and off the golf course. The new S2G SL is based off a running shoe design which is where the modern, sporty silhouette comes from. Interestingly, it is also available in a spiked model.
As we have given these the best value tagline, we need to talk about the cost. The S2G GL have an RRP of £90, which instantly puts them amongst the best budget golf shoes, especially as they’re coming from a reliable brand like adidas. Of course there are cheaper options out there, but we feel that as a total package (plus being able to wear them away from the course) it’s very difficult to find a better value option.
Another good feature is the implementation of Lightstrike technology through the midsole, something which we usually see in the spiked models from adidas. When it comes to comfort, we found it to be a much wider fit than other adidas golf shoes, so it does indeed fit true to size and it’s a good option for golfers with wide feet.
Best Classic Design
The Premiere Series Field shoe from Footjoy provides a great mix of style, functionality, and solid performance on a range of lies and courses. These are a spikless shoe with the kind of look normally associated with the classic spikes, and these are the preferred footwear of PGA Tour players Adam Scott and Max Homa,
Despite the classic design that makes them look like an old fashioned pair of shoes you might have seen on Nick Faldo in the 1990s, the Premiere Series Field are extremely lightweight. There are different colorways available too, so there should something to suit everybody. The key selling point here is that the old-school style is perfectly complimented by modern day performance, putting the Premiere Series Field very much in the conversation for the best FootJoy golf shoes.
In terms of performance, our testing showed that the grip and stability on offer was very good and gave us secure footing from a variety of different lies, although we should point out that when it gets really wet, spikeless designs are generally not going to be as effective. Where this model stood out for us was the comfort on offer. We experienced no discomfort or rubbing even straight out of the box, and it’s also worth mentioning that that FootJoy offer medium and wide fit designs too.
Best Sneaker Design
Golfers are truly spoilt for choice when it comes to the best Nike golf shoes. The brand has countless stylish models available to purchase and every year the collection grows. We could have selected any number of Nike shoes for this guide, but we have opted to go with the Air Jordan Low 1 G golf shoe as we feel it provides a sneaker-style that many golfers will absolutely adore.
There was a time when shoes like this would have been hugely frowned upon by the golfing establishment, but in an attempt to become less stuffy and more accessible to all, golf fashion has become a lot more wide ranging and nothing typifies that more than the popularity of Jordan style shoes.
The Low 1 G is a stitch-for-stitch reconstruction of the standard Air Jordan 1 shoe, meaning it benefits from full leather materials and an encapsulated air unit in the heel of the shoe for added comfort. After using these shoes solidly for a month, our tester stated that: “I never came off the course after 18 holes with aching feet or legs”.
Of course some modifications need to made to make shoes suitable for use on the golf course, and Nike’s engineers have adjusted the outsole of this shoe to include a forefoot pivot circle to provide extra traction on one of the most vital areas of the foot during the golf swing.
The shoe was able to handle all but the wettest of conditions. In the damp and dry conditions we tested in we had no problems, but we wouldn’t wear these in properly wet conditions.
Best Spikeless Golf Shoe From 2022
Building nicely on the foundations of their excellent Biom H4, the C4 saw a new sneaker-style aesthetic introduced and with a wide range of color options available, there should be something for everyone’s tastes. This shoe was our pick for the best shoe of 2022 and it is still holding its own against anything that has been released since.
The performance of this shoe was exceptional and more than matched the great looks. We experienced excellent comfort and breathability throughout our time on the golf course, while Ecco has used a super-soft performance leather across the shoe along with Fluidform technology to create a balance of cushioning and rebound below the foot, which we found really enhances the comfort on offer.
Another terrific feature that impressed us in testing is the Exhaust Grid technology that scoops fresh air towards the sole of the foot to keep it cool. This is a great addition to any shoe and we feel that it helps to make the Biom C4 one of the most breathable shoes on the market.
Best Off Course
True Linkswear is a relatively fresh brand out of the Pacific Northwest formed by PGA Tour player Ryan Moore and his brother Jason. They specialise in casual fashion golf shoes that offer comfort, performance and wearability away from the golf course, and we are are big fans.
We’ve tested several shoes from True Linkswear and we have always been impressed by the style and comfort on offer. The Lux Hybrid shoe is one of the brand’s flagship models and in our experience it ticks all the boxes as one of the best golf shoes you can wear on and off the golf course. From the moment you step out of your front door to play golf, you can wear these shoes all day long and with pretty much any outfit thanks to the selection of neutral colors and smart-casual silhouette. It’s as comfortable as any standard sneaker is while also offering performance benefits on the course.
A Wanderlux midsole is soft to the touch, but still firm enough underfoot to offer a decent amount of support when swinging the golf club. We found the Lux Hybrid to be lightweight, incredibly comfortable and it offers enough grip to deal with an array of conditions. Another bonus is that it’s fully waterproof despite the knit construction and all in all we would say this is an excellent model from a stylish, up and coming golf brand.
Spiked Models
Best Spiked Golf Shoe 2024
It’s hard to believe that the flagship performance golf shoe from adidas is now approaching its 20th anniversary. For 2024 the Tour 360 has benefitted from a complete redesign from the inside out, with new technology being introduced into the familiar, well loved silhouette.
One of the changes from the previous model is that the moulded spikes issue has been addressed and removable spikes have been introduced on the 2024 shoe. The Tour360 is always one of the best spiked golf shoes in its class and the 2024 release is arguably the best yet. One of the stand out features is a new ‘T-Shape’ suede microfiber heel, which is a three-piece construction that combines a soft, anti-abrasive sandwiched textile running from the inside heel to the top of the collar. We feel that this gives a softer feel than the previous shoe based on our testing, while also offering improved comfort and durability. The insole has been reshaped too and we could instantly feel more arch and heel support which again provides a boost in comfort and performance, making this one of the best adidas golf shoes we’ve ever tested.
Best Support
As with the SL version of the Drive Pro featured above, this shoe features the same Swing Support System – otherwise known as S3. The difference between the two is pretty simple – the SL is spikeless whereas this version has nine spikes on the sole to provide incredible grip.
The spikes are a combination of two designs. Five of the nine are the new Soft Spike Tour Flex Pro, whilst the remaining four are the S3. As mentioned above, renowned bio-mechanist JJ Rivet developed these shoes and the spikes are a vital part of what he was trying to achieve. Rivet wanted them turned precisely 10° clockwise to hit a precise angle of slip that he wanted to resist. Our experience in testing confirm that Rivet is certainly onto something as they worked faultlessly. We were able to keep our foot planted to the ground throughout the swing whilst there was plenty of foot support in the key areas.
One last new addition we liked is the lacing system and the lightweight feel (it weighs just 12oz). The Pro shoe performed very well in testing and when it comes to performance we have nothing but positive things to say. As for negatives, well the only thing that comes to mind is that we weren’t especially keen on the the writing on the side of the shoe. It’s worth mentioning too that the Drive Pro comes in at a slightly lower price point compared to other premium designs so you are getting good value for your money.
Best Firmer Feel
Nike golf shoes are among some of the best around and you’ll see them represented strongly in the professional game with the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Brooks Koepka and Rory McIlroy and many others. The Victory Tour 3 is the shoe of choice for McIlroy and it is one of our favorites too.
We loved the Victory Tour 2 shoes and but Nike have taken everything that made that shoe great and improved the performance further with the Victory Tour 3. We were so impressed in testing that it earned the full five stars in our review.
Nike have stitched a Zoom Air unit directly to the upper which delivered exceptional feel, while the foam at the heel was nice and cushioned, making them some of the best golf shoes for walking in.
The aesthetics of the Tour 3 have been improved in several subtle ways over the previous model. In our opinion the swoosh and midsole sections look slightly different and better, while the new full-grain leather upper provides the same supple feel and sophisticated look we’ve become accustomed to.
When it comes to comfort, we found that the internal strap on the inside of the shoe contours to your feet nicely, while there is extra padding around the ankle too, so these shoes compare well with anything we’ve tried when it comes to comfort.
Best Lightweight
Back in 2021, adidas released the fabulous ZG21 and it was easily one of our favorite shoes of that year. Now, the company have updated their offering with the ZG23, which is another lightweight, spiked model that is packed with technology to boost performance.
The primary upgrade is the introduction of Lightstrike and Lightstrike Pro technology to the newly revamped midsole. This technology is used in their basketball and running shoes, so as you might expect the comfort and softness on offer in this shoe was incredible. In combination with the softness of the upper (both on the outside and inside of the shoe) we have no hesitation in saying the ZG23 is right up there as one of the most comfortable spiked golf shoes money can buy.
Another improvement is that the Stability Fin has been upgraded to a 3D shape which is wrapped around the outside of the shoe, making it even lighter than what we saw in the ZG21. This ultra-lightweight feeling is very satisfying and we felt that it really reduced foot fatigue after walking 18 holes. The only area in which we felt slightly let down was in the looks department, which hasn’t changed much since the 2021 model. Not that this is a bad thing, but a bit more of a facelift might have made it a tough more exciting.
Best Heel Support
Payntr are an emerging name in the golf world but if you are unfamiliar with the name you should not let that put you off, as we have been extremely impressed when testing their products.
The first offering we tried was the X 003 spikeless golf shoe, which we thought was a stunning model that delivered excellent traction and comfort. Their first entry into the best spiked golf shoe market is the X 004 RS, which boasts one of the best soles on any golf shoe that we’ve tested in a long time.
In testing it was the sole that really stood out. The grip was strong and delivered a premium level of comfort and support. Additionally, the heel cup is built from a slightly different material which we found to be very soft and ensured there was no rubbing on the ankle, even straight out of the box.
A carbon fibre propulsion plate on the outsole helps golfers take advantage of ground reaction forces to deliver more speed to the golf ball, while one more feature worth talking about is the all-new SoftSpikes Tour Flex Pro spikes in the outsole. This is high end stuff, as each of these spikes has 10 different points of contact with the ground, which given there are seven spikes per shoe, means you have 140 points of contact with the ground, giving you exceptional traction.
Best Low Profile
The Phantomcat Nitro from Puma boasts one of the most unique outsoles we’ve ever seen. This is thanks to a brand-new Flexspike integrated cleat featuring some flash colors. This is the first time that we have seen it on Puma’s golf shoes and we enjoyed the look and performance on offer.
The spikes are designed to increase surface contact with the ground and improve weight distribution across the foot. The grip performed exceptionally, especially on the wet and muddy days we tested them on.
Because of the change to the sole, Puma’s engineers have made the Phantomcat Nitro lighter and, as the sub-heading suggests, lower in profile. Like the best Puma golf shoes there is plenty of value to be had here. The brand has introduced a new nitrogen-infused foam into the shoe which provides great softness and rebound, both when walking and hitting shots. In our testing we noted that the low profile spiked outsole worked well and will provide all year round wearability, whether the ground is dry or even very wet.
Women’s Golf Shoes
FootJoy Performa Women’s Golf Shoe
When it comes to the best women’s golf shoes, unsurprisingly FootJoy are one of the names that feature most prominently. Their newest model, the Performa, lives up to that billing but is something a little different to the norm. The modern, trainer-like design comes as a welcome breath of fresh air when compared to the more traditional looking women’s golf shoes we might be used to from the brand.
The FootJoy Performa has an athletic design meaning it looks and feels like more than a golf shoe and as such it can just as easily be worn away from the golf course too. There is an eye-catching sole design that really stands out too, and because it provides excellent traction when it’s wet underfoot, we feel that this is one of the best women’s spikeless golf shoes on the market.
We enjoyed testing the Performa and found that the waterproof nature of the shoes kept our feet nicely protected from the elements. The comfort and versatility was a particular stand out too, while another plus is that if you do opt to wear these in the winter months, the Performa wipes away mud easily and can be cleaned and maintained to look just like new.
The Payntr X-003 is ideal for women who are looking for a shoe with a sporty feel, but they also offer some clever technical advantages too, with a 3-dimensional traction on the sole providing excellent grip by resisting instability. In our testing we felt completely locked in and it was almost like they screwed themselves into the ground during the swing. This traction technology that has gone into the design of these shoes ensures that you are more stable through the shot and that gives a real reassurance, even in slippery conditions.
Other technological benefits come from a graphite Pebax propulsion plate that allows the golfer to effectively harness ground forces, while a Single Density PMX Foam Midsole absorbs shock as you walk, ensuring a high level of comfort. The best way to describe this feeling is that it’s like when you have a new pair of running shoes that provides maximum under foot support and softness.
They are fairly bulky in design and that might not be an ideal look for everybody, but that bulkiness partly explains the stability they offer and we don’t see it as a negative anyway as in our view it actually adds to the aesthetic.
G/FORE Women’s MG4+ Golf Shoes
The G/Fore MG4+ is a brilliant golf shoe which is cutting-edge in design. We tested this shoe extensively and can only say good things. The comfort levels are off the charts, as an innovative footbed inner sole literally massages your feet as you walk.
This inner sole is unlike any golf shoe you will have experienced before and it will have you bouncing up the fairway like you’re walking on air. If you’ve ever used one of those bumpy foot massage tools, you’ll know that great feeling of rolling it under your foot, relieving stress and tension. This shoe provides a similar feel while walking.
In our past experience, performance-orientated golf shoes can sometimes be a little ‘sturdy’ in feel and may take a few rounds to soften up, if at all. That was not the case here as the MG4+ fitted like a glove from the very first round. There was no need for breaking them in and there was no rubbing, which is very important as blisters are a sure fire way to ruin a round of golf very quickly.
While the comfort level is the thing that blew us away the most, we found that there were other performance benefits too. For example, this shoe has been designed to give your foot total swing support that allows you to feel grounded and stable throughout your shot. In terms of comfort, performance and looks, this shoe is the total package.
Puma Women’s Ignite Blaze Pro Shoes
The Puma Ignite Blaze Pro is a great shoe for golf in wet conditions as it is 100% waterproof and will provide full protection even on the rainiest of days. Not only will they keep your feet dry, they also provide great traction thanks to six well-placed spikes on the outsole. You may not want to use them in the depths of winter when the ground is muddy, but if you’re in a heavy downpour you will get great performance from this shoe.
Perhaps it isn’t quite as stable as some of the other models on the list, but if you want a nice blend of grip, breathability and comfort then we would highly recommend this offering from Puma.
The brand market these shoes as being for women who take their golf seriously, but we disagree with that as our testing showed them to be right up there with the most comfortable models we’ve ever worn, making them suitable for all women golfers and not just those who are ‘serious’ about the game.
How we test golf shoes
Our golf shoe testing methodology is based on putting models to a thorough test over a number of rounds and in different weather conditions. By doing it this way we gain a much better idea of the overall performance of the product in terms of factors like comfort, grip, stability, waterproofing and how they actually look on the golf course. It is important to stress that each of the shoes listed above has been personally used by a member of the Golf Monthly team. We believe that this is the best way of testing a golf shoe as using it in the real world over a number of weeks allows us to see how they perform when variables change like the weather, ground conditions, different stances and lies, and so on.
This also gives us information on the little details too. So for example, some brands may come up smaller or larger than others. Other models might start to rub a bit too much after 36 holes, while we can also identify which designs can be used off the golf course and for the drive home.
Finally, at Golf Monthly we are very comprehensive in our tests to the point where we will regularly attend product launches and meet with the manufacturer’s R&D experts to understand the new technology. That isn’t to say manufacturers can buy a good review, as all our reviews are made by golfers, for golfers.
How to choose the best golf shoe
There are a number of factors to consider when picking out your next pair of golf shoes so to help you narrow down your search and inform your buying decision, below we have put together some key points.
Getting the right fit
When picking out golf shoes getting the right fit is important because otherwise, blisters can build up which is an instant round killer. Alternatively, your feet may slide around inside, which limits your stability.
When it comes to the right fit it is also worth considering different laces. Normal laces are good for most but for some golfers, BOA-laced shoes provide more convenient fastening and shouldn’t loosen during the course of a round, but are usually a tad more expensive.
When trying a pair on for the first time, listen for the ‘whoosh’ sound when you slide your feet in – that’s the sound of all the air leaving the shoe to confirm it is the correct size, but do a walking test to be sure. They shouldn’t pinch anywhere, nor should your feet be moving around inside.
Waterproofing
If you live somewhere that gets a lot of rain then a waterproof shoe is a must. The best designs will keep your feet bone dry however if you play golf in glorious sunshine most of the time, then you may view other factors as more significant.
Many players choose to have one pair for winter and another, lighter pair for summer to keep them fresh and suit different requirements.
Spiked or spikeless?
The best golf shoes above are split into spiked (or cleated) and spikeless designs and there are pros and cons of each. Spikeless golf shoes offer off-course versatility. They are perfect for driving in the car to the golf course, playing a round, and then driving home again because they are usually light and comfortable, but most won’t offer as much traction as a spiked shoe. Spiked golf shoes offer better grip and stability but don’t sit as low to the ground as spikeless models.
Styling
Thankfully modern golf shoe design has seen many brands not just create traditional, classic-looking shoes, but also modern styles that can be used off the golf course too. Therefore it is important to think about what your shoes look like and what style suits you. Whatever you like or dislike, there is something for everyone these days.
FAQs
Why wear golf shoes?
Golf shoes are needed for golf because they have been designed to deal with all the things golfers face on the course. This takes the form of being as comfortable as possible because they have to be worn and walked in, all day. They also have to provide grip and traction as golfers make their swings whereas normal shoes don’t do this as well. Golf shoes tend to be waterproof as well whereas regular trainers often aren’t.
What are the best shoes for playing golf?
All of the shoes in our list will provide with an enjoyable, comfortable and performance enhancing experience on course. Golf shoes are specifically designed to support the movements of golfers and the conditions of a golf course, so make sure to invest in a proper pair of golf shoes.
How do I choose golf shoes?
There are a number of factors to consider. First ask yourself whether you want a spiked shoe for extra grip or a spikeless shoe for a more casual and a low profile look. Then consider whether it needs to be fully waterproof, what color and style you like and also work out your exact shoe size. Once you have answered these questions you’ll have narrowed down your search and you’ll be able to find the perfect shoe for your game.
Do Pro golfers use spikeless shoes?
The majority of golfers on Tour will wear spikleess shoes. This is because they play mostly in dry, warm conditions on highly manicured golf courses. However, you’ll see many Tour players switch to spiked golf shoes if they are playing in inclement weather. Some players, like Collin Morikawa with the adidas ZG23, always opt to wear a spiked shoe
