Beverly Hills star Shannen Doherty has died aged 53

American actress Shannen Doherty, known for her roles in the popular TV shows Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed, has died aged 53, her publicist has confirmed.

The US star had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015.

In a statement to US publication People, her publicist Leslie Sloane said: “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty.

“On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease.”

She added: “The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”

Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and documented her treatment. She kept the return of her cancer secret while she worked on the BH90210 reboot in 2019.

In February 2020, she revealed she had stage four cancer, saying it was “a bitter pill to swallow”.

Doherty rose to fame in 1990 as Brenda Walsh on Fox’s Beverly Hills, 90210.

After her departure from the long-running drama, Doherty went on to star alongside Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs in the supernatural series Charmed, in which they played three witches working together to fight evil.
