Bin lorry crashes into level crossing in horror Dublin collision

DART services have been suspended after a bin lorry crashed into a level crossing in north Dublin.

The incident happened earlier this evening as a stolen vehicle struck a level crossing at Sutton. The driver of the lorry was taken to hospital.

One witness told Dublin Live: “I was standing with the dog at the lowered level crossing when a bin truck smashes through it at full speed hitting the car stopped behind me. I was about to dial 999 but then seen Gardai in pursuit.

“The car had children in the rear and a pedestrian on the other side had some superficial cuts. It was sheer luck that nobody was badly injured or the DART wasn’t crossing at the point of impact. How it wasn’t stopped before this point is beyond me.”

DART services in Howth, Sutton, and Bayside were suspended after the horror crash.

A spokesperson for Irish Rail said services will remain suspended until further notice between Howth and Howth Junction after an earlier incident where a vehicle struck a level crossing in Sutton. They added: “Dublin Bus are honouring rail tickets in the affected area.”
