Boy, 12, falls out of moving coach onto M50 while going to the toilet

A young schoolboy had a miracle escape when he tumbled from a moving coach onto the busy M50 motorway after he fell out the emergency door.

It is understood the 12-year-old was going to use the toilet on the bus when he stumbled and fell out the emergency door onto Ireland’s busiest road. Fast-moving traffic managed to avoid the injured child lying on the road until he was moved onto the hard shoulder and then lifted over the motorway crash barrier. He received cuts and bruising and suffered severe shock but no serious injuries.

Gardai are investigating the incident, which took place at around 9.15am on Wednesday. It has emerged that a trucker who came upon the accident pulled his articulated lorry across part of the motorway to shield the emergency operation from the flow of traffic.

The boy was part of a school trip from the midlands – and the bus driver didn’t immediately realise what had happened. A witness said it was a miracle that the boy was not hit. “He wasn’t just lucky, it’s a miracle that he was not hit by traffic on that road,” he said.

“I thought that’s what had happened at first, I thought the boy had been hit by a car but then I was told he fell off the bus. The young chap was in shock and I could see he had loads of cuts on his chin and knees but I don’t think he had any real serious injuries.

“He was being treated by two first responders until the ambulance came. The bus driver who isn’t from this country obviously didn’t realise what happened and drove on about 500 yards before he stopped.”
