Brother of ex-finance minister Michael McGrath to run in general election
The brother of former finance minister Michael McGrath plans to run in the next general election in a bid to retain his brother’s seat.
Carrigaline-based Seamus McGrath, 49, the leader of the Fianna Fáil group on Cork County Council, and who got the highest first-preference vote of any candidate in the recent local elections, confirmed on Friday that he plans to seek his party’s nomination to run in Cork South Central.
His brother, Michael, stepped down as finance minister following confirmation that he is Ireland’s nominee to the European Commission.
He remains a TD but will not be contesting the general election.
Mr McGrath, who has been a councillor for 17 years, said he was humbled by his 5,000-plus vote in the local elections but said he knows he will have to fight for every vote if he is selected by the party to run in the general election.
“I had a good vote in 2019, and I felt my vote would be back this time but I was genuinely humbled by the vote I got in the local election,” he said.
“But obviously, I’m under no illusions about the work involved in winning a Dáil seat.
“When I became aware that this opportunity might arise, I consulted with family, friends and party supporters, and I have received a lot of support and encouragement, and if I am selected, I will run an energetic and active campaign.”
Mr McGrath is married to Gayle and they have three daughters, aged three to eight.
Cork South Central is increasing from four to five seats at this election.
