Bryson DeChambeau shows true colours after learning his new three-word nickname
Bryson DeChambeau completed a remarkable comeback to win the US Open on Sunday and was rewarded with a brand new nickname, a title he was very “humbled” to receive
Golf sensation Bryson DeChambeau couldn’t hide his delight at being dubbed ‘The People’s Champion’ following his stunning victory at the US Open.
The man historically known as ‘The Scientist’ clinched the US Open crown for the second time on Sunday. That was after he completed a remarkable comeback to defeat a capitulating Rory McIlroy at Pinehurst.
DeChambeau, 30, marked his win in unconventional manner and dashed around the course, inviting fans to get a touch of the trophy. He also took the time to engage with supporters and sign autographs after the comeback win, which was lauded by many in the golf community.
He’s now turned his attention back to the LIV Golf League in Nashville, and DeChambeau opened up to journalists about the affectionate new nickname he’s earned. And it soon became clear just how grateful the former college star is to have that honour.
“I’m humbled. Very humbled by it,” said the Californian as he geared up for the ninth event of the LIV calendar in Tennessee (via the Daily Express ). “I’ve always wanted to do really cool things for the game of golf, whatever that is. When I was younger, I felt like I was called to do something in the game. Getting to this point in my life, where I’ve had struggles, done some things I shouldn’t have done, said some things I shouldn’t have said.
“Messing up and learning from those mistakes, learning patience, resilience, determination, continuing to grow in that capacity, and then getting to a place where I finally get to showcase my true self [and] show others what this great game means to me – it’s given me so much – it’s time for me to give back.
“That’s what I love most. That’s why this was so important for everyone to touch the trophy [laughs]. I wanted everyone to experience it, because it wasn’t just for me. It was for the turnaround, everyone looking at me [and] going, ‘Wow, that person’s different than what I thought.’ It was for them, those people who saw who I am.”
He also discussed the team dynamic in the LIV Golf league and how the new environment has given him a welcome sense of support. DeChambeau hailed his second US Open victory as being “truly for LIV” and a nod to the confidence placed in him by the tour’s sponsors.
DeChambeau has often been a figure of debate, from his public disputes with Brooks Koepka to his controversial claim that Augusta should be considered a “par 67” course. That’s despite his own struggles at the Masters in the past, missing the cut in 2022 and 2023 having finished outside the top 25 in four straight editions prior to that.
The scenes witnessed in North Carolina on Sunday portrayed a star who is fully embraced by his community – or at least the American side of it. The People’s Champion will aim to steer clear of similar errors in the future as he strives to build a legacy that matches his evident potential.
