Building a Vibrant Community of Neurology Educators: Tracey Milligan, MD, MS, FAAN, FANA, FAES

“We have a really great calling to educate other people about neurology, about neurologic conditions. And whether that’s the public or non-neurologists who are taking care of patients, students that we want to encourage to enter the field of neurology—especially those students and learners who are not going to be neurologists—but really need to know a lot of neurology because it impacts so many people.”

Continuing medical education (CME) is importance for keeping clinicians, especially in the field of neurology, up-to-date with some of the rapidly evolving practices and guidelines. This type of education has shifted from passive lectures to learner-centered approaches that utilize newer technologies, online learning, and simulations. Overall, effective CME can improve knowledge, skills, and patient outcomes, with interactive, multimodal interventions being the most effective, as observed in research.1 Therefore, to optimize lifelong learning for neurologists, attentive education research and accessible CME interventions are essential.

At the 2024 American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting, held April 13-18, in Denver, Colorado, Tracey Milligan, MD, MS, FAAN, FANA, FAES, and Roy E. Strowd III, MD, FAAN, presented a talk in the neurology education room. In the first half of the session, Milligan presented the welcome remarks and introduction to the AAN Annual Meeting for educators. Following that, Strowd III talked about how attendees could get the most out of the annual meeting as an educator. The attendees even had the chance to connect with other educators to generate new connections and create collaboration opportunities.

Months after the meeting, Milligan, professor and chair of neurology at New York Medical College, and director of neurology at Westchester Medical Center Health Network, had a conversation with NeurologyLive® about how her experience in neurology education has evolved over their 20-year career. In addition, she talked about some of the key features and activities in the education room at AAN 2024. Moreover, Milligan suggested how clinicians could incorporate neurology education into a busy clinical practice.
