Bus kisses Galway city pub as double decker left stranded after incident
A Galway city bus was left stranded on a footpath just inches from a popular Galway pub after a failed turn saw the double-decker mount a path.
The wheel-y unfortunate incident occurred in the early evening of Tuesday 28 May 2024 at the north end of Eyre Square near the bottom of Prospect Hill. A witness described the bus driver turning the bus atop Eyre Square.
The witness told Galway Beo: “The driver went to turn the bus outside the bar.”

The witness then described the bus drivers efforts to turn the bus at the fork between the taxi rank and the main road, where the bus mounted a path near McGettigan’s pub and lurched to a stop just inches from the front of the bar.
The witness added: “But, the bus mounted the footpath and, I think it slid a tiny distance, and stopped just outside the bar – it was stuck.”
The bus was unable to move from this position and the witness told Galway Beo that engineers or mechanics arrived a short while after the incident to free the bus.
Thankfully, there were no injuries or damage to property reported as a result of the incident. A Bus Éireann spokesperson told Galway Beo: “Bus Éireann are aware of an incident involving one of our vehicles that occurred in the Eyre Square are of Galway on Tuesday, 28 May 2024. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported to Bus Éireann and no damages occurred. The safety of our passengers and staff is paramount to Bus Éireann. An investigation into the incident is being carried out.”
In other news, Temperatures may return to the 20s in coming days with a “better weekend coming” after a plume makes its way across the Atlantic to nestle over Ireland and the UK.
The weather channel, Matty Wolves, known for its more humorous take on the atmospheric conditions gave the news straight this time: “Once again the GEM and ECM are miles apart. Something’s got to give. Heights are firmly in control with the Canadian model and we even become close to a plume later with that little low out South West. Overall though, it’s a better weekend incoming. All eyes on next week.”
