Carlow woman who died after collision with van ‘was a real lady’

Agnes Broderick (nee Harney), of Browneshill Avenue, Carlow, died after being hit by a van at approximately 4.30pm on Thursday, June 27 in a private car park in Presentation Place, which is adjacent to the Cathedral in Carlow Town.

Agnes, who was aged in her 80s, was taken to St. Luke’s General Hospital in Kilkenny with serious injuries where she later died. The van driver was uninjured.

Her funeral details will be announced on Sunday evening.

A technical examination of the scene has been conducted and enquiries are ongoing.

Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council, Cllr Fergal Browne, said the community are devastated by the news.

“I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to the family. I know the family very well so I offer my deepest condolences to them at this very sad time,” said Cllr Browne.

“She was very involved in the community so everyone is devastated by the news. It is absolutely dreadful.”

One mourner wrote on RIP.ie: “Sincere condolences to all the Broderick family on the very sad passing of Agnes. I had the pleasure to work with her many years ago she was a real lady and an excellent nurse. Many happy memories of her.”

Another mourner wrote: “I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your precious mother, Agnes. My deepest condolences. “What a lovely lady Agnes was! A truly genuine person. I have fond memories of working with Agnes in the SHH. “There are no words, but please know that I am thinking of you all at this heart-breaking time. Rest in eternal peace in your heavenly home.”

Carlow Garda Superintendent Anthony Farrell said Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

“At approximately 4.30pm on Thursday evening in Presentation Place Carlow, which is adjacent to the cathedral, a woman in her 80s was impacted by a vehicle resulting in fatal injuries.

“Gardaí are investigating the circumstances of this collision and as part of that process would appeal for any witnesses that might of been in the area at the time or can provide any information that would support the Garda investigation to come forward.

“Maybe you were walking through the estate between Tullow Street and the cathedral or indeed College Street. Maybe you were parked in your vehicle at the time and have dashcam footage or indeed local residents who might have CCTV.

“Anybody who has any information that can support the Garda investigation, please alert Carlow Garda station on 059 913 6620,” concluded Superintendent Farrell.

A statement from An Garda Síochána confirmed: “Gardaí are investigating a fatal traffic incident involving a van and a pedestrian that occurred in Co Carlow, on the afternoon of Thursday June 27, 2024.

“The incident occurred in a private car park in Presentation Place in Carlow town at approximately 4:30pm.

“The pedestrian, a woman in her 80s, was taken to St. Luke’s General Hospital in Kilkenny with serious injuries. She has since been pronounced deceased and a post-mortem examination will be arranged. The van driver was uninjured.

“A technical examination of the scene has been conducted and enquiries are ongoing.”
