Cavan student wins prestigious bursary | NorthernSound

A student from DkIT’s Sustainable Agriculture degree, Brona McCabe from Crosskeys, County Cavan, has won a prestigious travel bursary and will be supported financially via the prize while on work placement in the UK this summer.

This bursary which is supported by the Agricultural Science Association (ASA) and the Irish Farmers Journal, has recently announced the details of this year’s recipients of the highly coveted PWE (Professional Work Experience) travel bursaries and Brona has been named as one of the beneficiaries.

These much sought-after bursaries both support and encourage students to expand their knowledge of the global Agriculture sector by gaining practical experience while traveling overseas. This award will enable Brona who is currently in third year in DkIT to travel to a Dorchester farm in the UK to work on a large-scale farm named JF Cobb and sons.

This farm is currently milking approximately 6,500 cows between five dairies. Brona said “I am looking forward to milking in a Rotary parlour as all my previous Milking’s have been carried out in a Herringbone parlour”. Brona from Co Cavan is currently from a beef, sheep and suckler family enterprise. She added “In the next coming years, she hopes to convert to dairy farming at home. She completed level 5 and level 6 Green Certs in Ballyhaise Agricultural College, and is currently in her 3rd year in a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sustainable Agriculture. Brona also milks 130 cows, morning and evening and she is working with Progressive Genetics carrying out milk recordings in order to help farmers achieve high milk quality.
