Cavs vs. Magic, 2024 NBA Summer League: preview, odds, TV

LAS VEGAS — The Cavs head to Las Vegas with hopes of repeating last year’s undefeated Summer League title run with their first contest taking place on Friday against the Orlando Magic with tip-off slated for 4 p.m. Eastern on NBA TV.

Those who have cut the cord can catch the game for free by utilizing streaming alternatives like FuboTV or DirecTV Stream, which both offer free trials. You can also try Sling, which offers pricing promotions for new customers.

More Cavs coverage

The rematch between the Cavs and the Magic from the first round of the Eastern Conference this past season might hold more weight for one player than any other: Craig Porter Jr. Porter was sidelined for the playoffs due to an ankle injury that he suffered in the final game of the regular season against the Charlotte Hornets. Although it’s unlikely Porter would have had a substantial role during the postseason, he mentioned seeing area where he could contribute from the sideline.

Porter now leads this year’s Summer League roster as he comes in to his second summer trip to Vegas with the most meaningful NBA experience after his rookie season.

“I feel like I’ve grown a lot, Porter said. “Not only as a person off the court but on the court. Overall, just learning how to be a pro and just learning habits and different ways to figure out how to score or really just impact a basketball game. I mean because when I first got here, I didn’t expect to be a scorer or anything or even to be with the Cavs at all. So, really to just do the things that I’ve done, it’s been big.

“[I’m] trying to find my voice [as a leader]. Overall, help myself and help the team. We want to go back-to-back and win another championship, obviously. The big thing is just learning everything. It’s a new system and new coaches.”

Emoni Bates, Pete Nance, and Luke Travers are other Summer League veterans looking to continue their success, but also showcase their talents to earn more time with the Cavs this coming season.

The Cavs’ surrounding roster is full of players who were undrafted out of college and getting their first taste of the NBA while hoping they can prove themselves worthy of a spot with any of the 30 teams in the league, even on a G-League or two-way contract.

These players will get four pool play contests to display their talents as the Cavs play on Friday against the Magic, Sunday against the Milwaukee Bucks, Wednesday against the Golden State Warriors, and Thursday against the Los Angeles Lakers.
