Chelsea are sitting on FFP goldmine with £69m transfer option
Chelsea are thought to be battling against Premier League spending limits this summer, meaning several players could be sold by June 30.
That’s because it’s the date that signals the end of the current three-year financial cycle within Profit & Sustainability Rules. Sacking compensation counts towards Financial Fair Play but Mauricio Pochettino’s exit via mutual consent saves such expenditure.
Chelsea would need to pay out compensation if they are to prise their next manager away from another club. Todd Boehly would need to agree a fee with Leicester for Enzo Maresca should he be chosen as the next boss.
Chelsea would not need to spend such money on an unemployed coach, such as Roberto De Zerbi, who left Brighton & Hove Albion upon the end of their season. Football.london understands that talks have taken place with Maresca, thus meaning – if chosen – a figure would need to be agreed with Leicester for the breaking of his Foxes contract.
And otherwise, regarding transfers and contracts, the Blues need to drum up cash to keep them below the spending limit threshold ahead of next term. One way to do that is to sell academy players.
Such youth products count as pure profit given they cost nothing to bring to the club, or at the very least, very little. The likes of Trevoh Chalobah and Conor Gallagher have been consequently linked with departures.

Chelsea would hold out for a big sum for the latter and would not allow Chalobah to go on a whim either, with his contract not up until 2028. However, three other academy stars could be sold more readily.
Lewis Hall’s future has already been decided with Newcastle United due to pay out £28m within their obligation-to-buy clause. The 19-year-old played 22 times for Newcastle this season, scoring twice. Only half of his appearances were starts, though.
Nevertheless that is already £28m in the bank while left-back Ian Maatsen could go for even more. The player’s father has already said that discussions with loan club Borussia Dortmund are already taking place, signalling that a return to Chelsea is all but off the table.
Maatsen, who secured his loan spell in January, is also attracting interest from other clubs albeit Chelsea apparently will not allow him to leave for less than £35m .
Finally, Omari Hutchinson might be let go on a permanent basis this summer following his successful loan spell at Ipswich Town, helping them to gain promotion to the Premier League with 11 goals and six assists in 50 matches.
He could possibly be loaned out again given his age of 20 and the fact two years remain on his Blues deal. However, cut-throat decisions may need to be made this off-season if Chelsea are deemed to be verging on breaking FFP rules.
Transfer market analysts Transfermarkt values him at just under £6m, a figure that would take Chelsea’s total income for the three to £69m. All three seem destined for an exit so Chelsea can cut their cloth accordingly with relative ease if they wish to drum up some quick cash.
