Cheslin Kolbe and Lukanyo Am fit to face Ireland as Rassie Erasmus names Springbok squad for summer series

Springboks supremo Rassie Erasmus has named a 39-player squad for the matches against Andy Farrell’s men and the world champions’ subsequent match against Portugal.

Erasmus is without eight injured players, with Steven Kitshoff (prop), Jean Kleyn, Lood de Jager (both locks), Cameron Hanekom (flanker), Jaden Hendrikse (scrumhalf), Henco van Wyk (centre), Canan Moodie and Damian Willemse (both utility backs) all ruled out. Leicester’s Jasper Wiese is suspended for both games.

Faf de Klerk (bicep), Makazola Mapimpi (hamstring) and new winger Edwin van der Merwe (shoulder) are all carrying injuries picked up in South Africa’s win over Wales, but have been included.

RG Snyman and Siya Kolisi have been called up after training with the team in London last week, while Bulls pair Kurt-Lee Arendse and Marco van Staden come into the frame after their URC final defeat to Glasgow.

They are joined by uncapped clubmates Johan Grobbelaar and Jan-Hendrik Wessels, , as well as fellow new face Pepsi Buthelezi from the Sharks

“Unfortunately, a handful of players are carrying injuries and were ruled out of the selection mix, but our plan to build depth in the last few years and expose players to Test rugby in the build-up to the 2023 RWC and against Wales last weekend certainly paid off,” Erasmus said.

“It’s great to have the overseas-based and Bulls players back in the mix and with many of them being Rugby World Cup-winners, they will bring experience and calm heads to the team.

“Over and above that, some of the young players who were part of our travelling squad to London really impressed us over the last two weeks, and while some of them have been included in this group, we were limited in terms of the number of players we could pick, so there will always be a few unlucky players.”
