Cillian Murphy slams Netflix film admitting ‘I don’t think it’s a good movie’

A film starring Cilian Murphy in 2005 is back on Netflix, and he is not a fan.

Red Eye, a thriller starring a young Cillian Murphy alongside Rachel McAdams, was recently added back to the streaming platform. In an interview, Murphy expressed how “crazy” it is that Americans were such huge fans of the movie.

“I love Rachel McAdams and we had fun making it,” Murphy added. “But I don’t think it’s a good movie. It’s a good B movie.”

Murphy made history this year as the first Irish person to win the Oscar for Best Actor. with a catalogue of acting credits that range from blockbusters to small, indie films.

While Red Eye may not have been one of his personal favourites, the character he played was what drew him to the project.

“I think it’s the duality of it. It’s why I wanted to play it,” Murphy said. “That two thing. The nice guy and the bad guy in one. The only reason it appealed to me is you could do that [snaps his fingers] that turn, you know?

Rachel McAdams, who had shot Mean Girls the year before, shared Murphy’s affection for her, telling interviewers what life was like on set. “They say the nicest people sometimes make the best villains,” she said. “We’d listen to music and gab away while doing the crossword puzzle, which he brought every day and would graciously let me chime in on.”

In an interview in 2021, Murphy also responded to questions about his performance in Red Eye, saying: “I didn’t think I gave a very nuanced performance in it. But, listen, if people love the movie then that’s great. I’m pleased with that. I’m less hard on myself now when I look at stuff. I’m less hypercritical of my work. But that’s probably a hangover from that to be honest.”
