Coach with college experience moving back to Wisconsin to lead Madison East

The Madison East boys basketball position went to a former college coach who was most recently in Nevada.

Ryan Sheehy was named Tuesday as the Purgolders’ next coach by Madison East athletic director T.J. Rogness. It is the second high school boys basketball position to be filled in Madison, and the fourth in the Big Eight Conference this offseason.

Sheehy succeeds longtime coach Matt Miota, who announced in April that he was stepping down from a position he held since May 2010. Sheehy takes over a program that had success, which included a state semifinal appearance in 2015, a 22-2 record in 2018-19 and 20-4 season in 2019-20, which was cut short before a sectional championship against Madison La Follette due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Madison East was 180-137 under Miota.

Sheehy most recently has been a boys basketball assistant coach and health/physical education teacher at Somerset Academy in North Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I am beyond excited to become the next boys basketball coach at Madison East,” Sheehy said. “I truly believe the program has limitless potential and cannot wait to get to work.”

Prior to Somerset, Sheehy was the boys basketball coach at Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove, California.

Ryan Sheehy brings college coaching experience to Madison East.

Sheehy has a bachelor of science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and a master’s of education degree from the University of Missouri.

He began his coaching career at National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Kilgore College in Texas and at De Anza College in Cupertino, California.

Madison East finished 12-11 last season, including 9-9 in the Big Eight Conference (tied for sixth with Madison Memorial). The Purgolders lost 69-63 to Oregon in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal.

Rogness hoped Sheehy “will become a teacher with us, but since the positions are held separately we will not know until the teaching staff is settled for next school year.”

Other boys basketball hirings in the Big Eight included Jay Swanson at Sun Prairie West, Drew Slempkes at Madison West and Jack Hoag at Janesville Craig.

Other boys basketball coaches in the area named previously included Kevin Schmotzer at Madison Edgewood and Caleb Bohrer at Portage.
