Compensation paid in Laois football assault case

A man who assaulted a football player during a match in Laois paid  over the remainder of his compensation last week.

David Macmahon (46) of 25 Woodlands Park, Coill Dubh, Naas, Co Kildare had previously  headbutting the soccer player at Arlington FC football club in Portarlington on April 23, 2023.

He was order to pay €3,000 and handed over €1,000 at a court hearing last May.

Garda Paul Dooley confirmed the remainder had since been handed in.

“Compensation was paid over and it was handed over to the injured party,” he told a sitting of Portlaoise District Court.

Judge Andrew Cody noted the man wasn’t present at the court sitting when the case was called.

“This was a serious enough case. I didn’t say I would strike out,” he remarked.

He remanded the defendant on bail to appear at Portlaoise District Court on June 27.
