Conor McGregor won over €1m with bet on Spain to win Euro 2024

Conor McGregor had extra cause for celebration on his 36th birthday after he won over €1million following Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph.

On June 14, the day that the tournament started, the UFC star put €83,500 (£64,479) on Spain to win the tournament at odds of 11/1.

McGregor was delighted that his prediction came to fruition on Sunday and he tweeted: ‘€1million won on my birthday!’.

When he initially placed the bet McGregor was full of confidence that Spain would prevail. He wrote: ‘Vamos Spain! Easy money on the Spaniards to win the Euros on my birthday! A nice meal for the Mac!’.

Spain beat England 2-1 in the final on Sunday night as they won the European Championship for a record fourth time. 

Nico Williams put Spain ahead early in the second half prior to Cole Palmer levelling for England. Mikel Oyazarbal then got the winner for Spain late on.

Spain produced some impressive displays during the tournament, with wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams often catching the eye. 

Irishman McGregor will certainly have been delighted to see England miss out on glory, with Gareth Southgate’s side losing in the European championship final for the second tournament in succession.

Former England international Alan Shearer believes that the defeat to Spain will prove to be Southgate’s last game in charge of the Three Lions.

‘I suspect he might say “over to someone else”,’ Shearer said, speaking during the BBC’s live coverage. ‘I suspect it will be Southgate’s last game.

‘There will be great disappointment at home. Yes, we could have played more attacking football, but they have got to the final.

‘When you are here, you have got to get over the line.’
