Conor McGregor’s camp deny wild claim by UFC pundit Chael Sonnen
The controversial UFC star is known for his wild theories on the popular podcast
Conor McGregor’s team has coming out fighting after former UFC champion Chael Sonnen made wild claims about why the Dubliner pulled out of the upcoming fight.
A representative for the fighter reiterated to TMZ overnight that it was in fact an injury sustained in training that resulted in UFC303 being cancelled and not the bizarre claims of Sonnen who claimed he was in rehab.
Sonnen had made the unfounded claim – despite the fact McGregor’s team and Dana White had made it clear the Crumlin fighter had suffered an injury.
McGregor has since also been updating his social media accounts, clearly showing he is not in any facility.
McGregor’s spokesman Karen Kessler vehemently denied the accusation and informed the US news site, TMZ, that the fighter is looking forward to a new date. She said: “The fight was cancelled after an injury he sustained during training. He is looking forward to a new date.”
Sonnen made a startling accusation, saying the Irishman was in rehab insinuating this was the reason for UFC 303 cancellation.
Dana White, though, previously revealed that the Irishman was injured and the fighter’s camp reaffirmed that.
The trash talker was on the Good Guy/Bad Guy podcast with another former UFC star Daniel Cormier and claimed: “What incredible irony that both sides have these massive interests in alcohol, and one side is in the middle of rehab for substance abuse, including alcohol.”
American fighter Sonnen is often known for putting out wild theories in public.
Ariel Helwani has previously reported that there’s no salacious story involved in Conor McGregor’s UFC 303 withdrawal.
It is believed that the highly-anticipated return of McGregor to the Octagon will happen later in the year and it will still be against Michael Chandler.
The Notorious is still the biggest draw in the UFC yet he has not competed since July 2021 when he was defeated by Dustin Poirier after breaking his tibia.
A new date for the fight has yet to be confirmed.
