Cork SHL: Goals the difference as Glen Rovers get a vital win over Carrigtwohill
Carrigtwohill 0-16
Glen Rovers 2-16
ANOTHER top class display from Glen Rovers easily saw off Carrigtwohill in the Red FM Division 1 league clash at Carrigtwohill on Friday night.
This was the second win in 72 hours for the Blackpool side who have certainly gathered momentum as their league campaign matured with only one game remaining against Douglas.
Once again the Glen had captain Dean Brosnan leading their scoring with a 1-4 tally as their class was clear to see from start to finish.
The Glen looked lively in the opening exchanges with Adam Lordan hitting the post just 23 seconds into the game as the ball was cleared to safety.
The shooting of both sides was poor as they amassed six wides in the opening four minutes.
A minute later the drought ended when Evan Murphy struck over a point from a placed ball for the Blackpool outfit.
The Glen were certainly the better team and further points from Simon Kennifick and Reece Dunne gave them a three point lead in the eight minute.
A good solo run by Peter Hogan ended the Carrigtwohill drought but consecutive Glen points gave them a four point cushion midway through the half.
Dean Brosnan has given great service to the Glen over many years and the captain showed his class in the space of one minute with a goal and a point that surged his team into a 13 point lead.
To be fair Carrigtowhill just like their opposition were missing some key players but they struggled big time in winning dirty ball as the Glen basically outmuscled them in every department.
Luckily after going 13 minutes without registering a score Carrigtwohill finished with consecutive points but they had a mountain to climb in the second half when they trailed 2-10 to 0-4 at the interval.
There is little doubt the opening half belonged to the city side but Carrigtwohill after a decent league campaign will be hugely disappointed with their display as they needed a huge second half to get back in the game.
On the restart Jay Horgan had a great opportunity to open the Carrigtwohill scoring in their opening possession but after making a terrific run he pulled his shot wide of the posts.
The wind got stronger and Carrigtwohill improved but in truth the Glen had taken their foot off the pedal in the second half.
The Glen didn’t produce the same standard of hurling but credit to this young Carrigtwohill side they refused to wilt and kept battling to the wire.
There is little doubt the introduction of the former Tipperary player Tommy Dunne has added a different voice to the Glen camp as many of their fringe players have risen to new heights during this league campaign.
In the end the Glen were by far too classier for this Carrigtwohill outfit in a game that was settled in the opening 30 minutes.
