Coronation Street’s Channique Sterling-Brown responds to shocking Joel discovery

Coronation Street star Channique Sterling-Brown has responded to the reveal that her character Dee-Dee Bailey’s boyfriend is Lauren Bolton‘s mystery attacker.

In a special week of episodes, it was finally revealed that Joel Deering was Lauren’s secret boyfriend and responsible for her disappearance.

Speaking to Good Morning Britain yesterday (May 31), Channique and Calum Lill, who plays Joel, spoke about the discovery.

On what it means for Dee-Dee, Channique said: “The thing is for Dee-Dee at the moment, she is absolutely none the wiser, as is the rest of Weatherfield. And she is in love with this man, and he’s in love with her as well.

“And so, I think, it is the version that is being presented that she absolutely accepts. Why would she think any differently? But obviously as is true to life, what is in the dark always comes to light. So it will be a very interesting journey.”

On whether Dee-Dee has any concerns or suspicions about her partner, Channique added: “Dee-Dee does not have a clue. She’s absolutely oblivious, because, why would she be suspicious?

“So for us it’s been such a fun journey because we’ve kinda always known where it’s going. And it’s going to be really great for the audience to be clued in as to who Joel really is. But how that will be revealed to Dee-Dee remains to be seen.”

Channique and Calum also both spoke about how people have reacted to the big reveal, with Calum saying he watched the episode in question with his nan, who is a big Corrie fan.

“I went to my Grandma’s house and watched it with her,” he said. “She couldn’t believe it. I don’t think she can look at me in the same light anymore. She gave me the side eye and was like ‘my grandson is a murderer’.”

Channique added: “It’s been a huge week for Corrie… but yeah, last night [people were] like ‘run Dee-Dee’ and ‘you’re going to be next’.”

Next week in Coronation Street, Joel will propose to Dee-Dee, but will she say yes?

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
