Counting gets underway for Dublin councils at Local Elections 2024

The ballot boxes are open and counting has begun in the Local Elections.

Boxes are being opened and sorted at the RDS where counting for Dublin City Council will also take place later today. Counting will begin for South Dublin, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown and Fingal will move to local centres later this evening.

A total of 183 seats will be filled across the four Dublin local authorities while tallies are also commencing for the European elections where four MEPs will be elected to the Dublin constituency. However the European results cannot be officially announced until tomorrow evening after polls close across the continent.

We’ll have all of the latest updates on the counts throughout the day in our live blog below.

Outside of Dublin there are reports of a possible mouse in a ballot box!

Counters in Mayo have been warned to be careful as a mouse may have got into a ballet box there. Meanwhile a number of rings have been returned to people after they fell into ballot boxes in Wexford and Wicklow.

Not looking like a good day for Sinn Fein

At the last General Election, Sinn Fein were criticised for not running enough candidates on the back of a surge in support for the party. But this time it’s looking like they may have fielded too many candidates with the vote being split in a number of LEAs and further prefernces unlikely to transfer to running mates.

Still very early days

These are just tallies so far with the counting set to begin later this afternoon and transfers will play a big part in who secures seats.
