Cricket: Sunday relishes 1000 runs milestone

Female Yellow Greens batter Salome Sunday say she’s looking forward to achieving more feats for Nigerian after hitting a historic 1000 runs for the country and being the first player to reach that mark, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 22-year-old achieved the feat at the recently-concluded Kwibuka Women’s T20i tournament in Rwanda where the Female Yellow Greens managed to finish fourth.

“Huge congratulations to Salome Sunday for reaching an incredible milestone of 1000 WT20i runs! Keep shining,” the Nigeria Cricket Federation said in a congratulatory post to the player.

Sunday, who made debut for Nigeria in 2019 has gone ahead to make 62 T20i appearances as one of the most experienced players in the young Female Yellow Greens squad.

“Well, just like they say a journey of a thousand miles begins with a step, I feel like I took the push through every single step till I’m here and I will just keep doing what got me here,” the player told PUNCH Sports Extra.

Currently standing at 1031 runs, Sunday has hit 114 4s and just five 6s while she is also yet to record a century in a game.

She remains confident that the numbers will keep getting better.

“Looking back and seeing how far I’ve come with this team, it surely motivates me to reach for bigger things and that would be possible with the support of the technical team and my teammates.”

In her 62 games for Nigeria, her highest run was the 48 she got on board against Malawi during the tournament in Rwanda. That figure is bettered by Piety Lucky who hit 70 runs in the same game.

Sunday started sports as a football player at Ukanafun, Akwa Ibom State but switched to cricket after changing schools upon realising her new school didn’t have a football team.
