Cyclist in his 70s dies after collision in Cobh

A man in his 70s has died in Cork University Hospital following a road traffic incident in Cobh on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred in Ballywilliam, Cobh at around 8.30am, with the cyclist being found on the side of the road by emergency services, and transported to hospital in a serious condition.

Gardaí are to arrange a post-mortem examination, with anyone who witnessed the incident or has video footage asked to make this available to Gardaí.

The fatality marks the 95th road death in Ireland so far in 2024, and the 13th in Cork.

A Garda spokesperson told The Echo, “Gardaí attended the scene of a fatal road traffic incident that occurred at approximately 8:30am on Saturday 6th July 2024 at Ballywilliam, Cobh, Co. Cork.

“A male pedal cyclist, aged in his 70s, was found unresponsive on the side of the road and taken to Cork University Hospital in a serious condition. He has since been pronounced deceased.” 

They added, “A post-mortem examination will be arranged and this will determine the course of the Garda investigation. The road was closed for a time but has since re-opened.”
