Daniel Farke’s Georginio Rutter verdict as Brighton ponder fresh approach

Daniel Farke and his coaching staff have found a way to get the best out of Georginio Rutter on a regular basis. The maverick French forward excelled last year in Leeds United’s promotion challenge, contributing eight goals and 16 assists.

Shifting Rutter from a central role into the No 10 position paid dividends in the second half of the season. He flourished in the free role as Patrick Bamford rediscovered his goal-scoring touch.

It is no surprise to see Premier League clubs register an interest in signing Rutter following the Whites’ promotion near-miss. As revealed by Leeds Live, United have snubbed a £30m offer from Brighton and Hove Albion for the player this week. The Seagulls are looking to bolster their attacking options and are believed to be considering making another move for Rutter, who still has four years left on his deal.

Seeing Rutter follow Archie Gray out of the Elland Road exit door is the last thing Farke needs as he looks to build a squad capable of challenging for the title. Farke has already made his feelings clear on Rutter’s qualities.

“His talent and potential is outstanding, but lots of work is necessary,” said Farke in an interview last October. “Sometimes chooses the harder option. We have worked on his effectiveness. Top level for goal involvement. Improve his ability to score more goals. He can be really, really special player in the future.“

Rutter reported back in for the first day of pre-season testing at Thorp Arch as United begin their preparations for the 2024/25 season. The Whites kick off their campaign at home to newly-promoted Portsmouth on Saturday, August 10.
