Daniel O’Donnell welcomes new daughter-in-law at stunning Italian wedding

The singer has spent the last three days in Tuscany, Italy, where Majella’s son, Michael, yesterday tied the knot with his long-time partner, Australian-born Sarah, in a fairytale wedding ceremony outside Florence.

Speaking exclusively to sundayworld.com, Daniel revealed that the festivities included some Greek traditions as Sarah’s family on both sides are originally from Greece.

“Sarah’s people are all of Greek extraction, her grandparents on both sides were all from Greece and they all moved to Australia,” he said.

“Michael met Sarah in London and they now live in Melbourne. They wanted a European wedding so they chose to come to Italy. Sarah is a lovely person and she’s beautiful. They have been together for 11 years, so they didn’t rush into it.”

Their family and friends travelled from all over the world to attend the three-day event in Tuscany. They included Majella’s daughter, Siobhan, husband Gavin, and their three children, Olivia, Archie and Luke.

“It’s a gathering,” Daniel said. “Sarah’s parents and sisters and brother and godparents and friends came from Australia and Michael’s friends that he grew up with were there. A lot of them are in London.

“Majella’s whole family was there – her sister and husband and their two children from New Zealand, her brother and his wife from England, and her sister Josephine and one of her daughters from Galway. It’s such a beautiful setting and a beautiful place to have a wedding.”

Daniel revealed he had the honour of singing for the newlyweds’ first dance – and their song choice was the Eric Clapton classic, Wonderful Tonight.

He laughed as he recalled how grandson Archie, was horrified by the Greek tradition of smashing plates during the festivities, which is said to bring good luck.

“They broke the plate and Archie was horrified. ’What are they doing, Gaga?’ he asked me. I told him that’s something they do .’That’s a waste of money, Gaga,’ he said. It was so funny.”

Daniel and Majella met when her children, Siobhán and Michael, were young. He previously told how there were no difficulties with becoming their stepfather.

“I was never about to replace their dad or anything like that,” Daniel said. “We are very close and we’ve only ever had lovely times with them.

“I’ve never regretted not having children of my own and I’ve never felt deprived in any way. I’m very content and fulfilled in where I am and the bond I have with Majella’s children.”

Today he is a doting grandad. “Grandkids are just great. In fact, they are the best ever,” Daniel adds. “They don’t give a hoot who you are, who you know or what you have. It’s just what you are to them that matters.”
