Ireland’s Danielle Hill has won a gold medal at the European Swimming Championships in Serbia.

The Tokyo Olympian, who was on the brink of giving up competitive swimming less than a year ago, stormed to victory in the 50m backstroke in a time of 27.73 in Belgrade.

Ireland’s fastest-ever female swimmer, who will be competing in the 50m freestyle and the 100m backstroke at the Paris Games, is Ireland’s first European long course champion in 27 years.

From Larne in County Antrim, the 24-year-old has been in smashing form all year and her gold medal performance in Belgrade is the perfect sent-off for the Paris Games.
