Alex de Minaur has made a heartfelt statement to his new No.1 fan after upsetting Daniil Medvedev to become the first Australian man to make the French Open quarter-finals in two decades.

The Sydneysider came from a set down on Monday to defeat the former US Open champ Medvedev 4-6 6-2 6-1 6-3 to make it to just his second quarter-final in a Grand Slam.

After his last match, De Minaur made a plea to social media to find out the name of a young fan who braved the elements to cheer him on.

‘I need to find the name of this legend!!! Message me on instagram, I need you for the next round,’ wrote de Minaur, after Roland Garros had posted film of the youngster supporting him on Court 14.

De Minaur found the youngster named ‘Paul’ – who happens to be French, not Australian – and invited him back for his match against Medvedev, with the youngster cheering him on again.

And while many fans assumed Paul was an Aussie given how hard he was barracking for de Minaur, he is actually French.

After the win, De Minaur – who speaks both French and Spanish – shared a heartwarming embrace with the young fan and told him in French: ‘I listened to you on every point’.

The Aussie was asked if he would be bringing the fan to his next match after the huge win over Medvedev. ‘Oh, 100 per cent. He managed a miracle,’ he replied.

‘Yeah, might have to get him on tour week in, week out.’

De Minaur went on to explain that he organised for Paul and a crew of his mates to come along to the match.

‘No, we found him obviously through the beautiful world of social media, we ended up finding him. We got him to the match. He came with his whole crew, with his mates and his coach,’ he said.

‘Yeah, it was great to see him out there. Again, even on that big court, I could hear him after every single point. It’s a distinctive voice, so it’s great to see.’

De Minaur is now planning to have his good luck charm along for his next match too.

‘He’ll be around. I think he’ll be, you know, chilling with me tomorrow in my practice day, and of course he’ll be there for the very next match.’
