There’s a school of thought — of which I am the principal — that only in exceptional circumstances should former professional footballers be working as television pundits. How is that dictum working out after the first week of Euro 2024?

We’ll come to that in a moment, but first we’ll go back a few months when a man called James Horncastle appeared on TNT Sports, talking about the Italian club Atalanta, who had just beaten Liverpool FC. What he said, and the way he said it, caused a sensation. Well, a football pundit-type sensation anyway.
