All-Ireland SFC Group Three, Round Three: Derry 2-7 Westmeath 0-9
Derry booked their place in Monday morning’s preliminary quarter-final draw after a nervy and hard-fought four-point win over Westmeath in Newry’s Páirc Esler last night.
Goals at the end of each half from Conor McCluskey and Emmett Bradley broke the resistance of a gallant Westmeath side and ended a run of three successive Championship defeats for Derry.
The opening 20 minutes was as cagey as one might expect given what was at stake for both sides.
Ronan O’Toole’s quick feet and accuracy from open play caused Derry problems in the early stages.
The St Loman’s clubman scored three of his side’s five first half points and Derry struggled to get to grips with Westmeath’s talisman.
Indeed, they were indebted to goalkeeper Odhran Lynch for making a smart save to dey James Dolan early on after a delightful through ball from Jamie Gonoud.
Conor Glass converted a 45 for Derry’s opening point when Charlie Drumm made a great tackle to deny Ciaran McFaul a shot on goal.
Derry had a couple of half chances in the first half with Brendan Rogers failing to get on the end of a pass from Shane McGuigan.
Lachlan Murray and Eunan Mulholland clipped over good scores from play, but it was Westmeath who led 0-5 to 0-4 when midfielder Ray Connellan landed a fine point from play after 32 minutes.
The tone of Mickey Harte’s half-time teamtalk was altered dramatically when Derry hit Westmeath for a goal on the cusp of half-time.
With their forward unit struggling for cohesion, Derry’s defenders linked up to plunder a vital goal.
Diarmuid Baker broke the tackle and played Donncha Gilmore in on goal. Conor McCluskey appeared off his right shoulder, took the pass and buried the ball low into Jason Daly’s net.
When Mulholland curled over his second from play in stoppage-time, the Oak Leafers headed to the dressing room with a 1-5 to 0-5 lead.
James Dolan opened the scoring for the Lake County in the second half before Shane McGuigan replied with a free.
In a crucial two-point swing, Conor Glass rose highest above the Derry crossbar to save a Ronan Wallace 45 before scoring a great point from play at the other end in the same passage of play.
Yet, Westmeath’s race wasn’t run and a hat-trick of points from substitutes Robbie Forde, Stephen Smith and Jack Smith threatened to end Derry’s season.
Needing only a draw to progress, Dessie Dolan’s side couldn’t get back on level terms. Six minutes after cutting the gap to the minimum, Westmeath’s defence was breached for a second time.
Diarmuid Baker was again a man to break the line and he set up Emmett Bradley for an empathic finish.
It was by no means a convincing performance by Derry, but they live to fight another day. At this stage of the season, that’s all that matters.

The Football Review Committee have set out to make Gaelic Games “the most enjoyable amateur games in the world to play and watch” and they’ve come up with some radical rules changes in order to achieve that aim.
Starting this weekend in Mullingar, the ‘Sandbox Games’ will feature players not longer involved in the 2024 Championship with several new rules on trial, most notably four points for a goal and a new two-point scoring zone from outside a 40-metre arc.
Other rule changes proposed include starting games with one-on-one contests at midfield with the other two midfielders joining the rest of the players behind the 45-metre lines.
New kick-out rules will also be tried with kick-outs taken from the small rectangle or all from the 20-metre line have having to go beyond the new 40-metre arc.
Goalkeepers will only be able to receive possession of the ball in the large rectangle and teams will be required to keep three players, including the ’keeper inside their own 65 at all times.
The attacking mark will be amended to be taken inside the 20-metre line with the ball kicked outside the 45 and the advantage rule will no longer be restricted to five seconds.
Dissent, tactical or delaying fouls will be punishable with a free move forward 30 or 50 metres.
The rules will be tested again in further games in Claremorris, Portlaoise, Armagh and Limerick in the coming weeks.
