Did Gwyneth Paltrow reconcile Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson

A shock new report has revealed that Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin secretly split, but have since reconciled and are now ‘going strong’. 

The fiercely private couple rarely comment on their romance so it is not known when the breakup occurred or what it is that brought them back together. 

However, there is one person that could have intervened in the split and it’s none other than Chris’ ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow. 

Since ‘consciously uncoupling’ from the Coldplay frontman in 2014, Gwyneth has remained not just an amicable co-parent for their children Apple, 20, and Moses, 18, but good friend to her ex and a confidant to his on/off partner Dakota. 

And it wouldn’t be the first time Gwyneth has stepped in before and brought Chris and Dakota’s on/off romance back from the brink. 

In 2019 it was claimed the Sliding Doors star intervened when the couple hit a rocky patch and convinced them to reconcile. 

A source told Us Weekly at the time: ‘Gwyneth is the one who pushed them to do it.

‘Gwyneth is happy if Chris is happy, she only wants the best for him.’

As well as wishing the best for her ex, Gwyneth – who is now married to Brad Falchuk – is actively friends with the star. 

The former couple are supportive of one another’s new romances, with Chris even joining Gwyneth, their children, and her new spouse on a family vacation for her and Brad’s honeymoon. 

When reports emerged this year that Dakota and Chris were engaged, Gwyneth is said to have given her blessing to the pair. 

She previously said of Dakota: ‘We’re actually very good friends. I love her so much. She’s an adorable, wonderful person.’

In 2020, she once again spoke about Dakota, saying: ‘I can see how it would seem weird because it’s sort of unconventional. But I think, in this case, just having passed through it iteratively, I just adore her.’ 

Dakota meanwhile happily posed for a picture with her husband-to-be’s ex, while also gushing over the former couple’s kids Apple, 19, and Moses, 17.

She told Bustle: ‘I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart.’

As a member of a large blended family herself, Dakota has learned to embrace connections that aren’t blood-related.

Dakota’s parents are actors Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson. They both split, with Don marrying Kelley Phleger in 1999 and Melanie tying the knot with Antonio Banderas in 1996. They divorced in 2015. 

When the reporter brought up a photo Gwyneth posted of her and Dakota, she said: ‘I grew up in a family that was so big, and I just believe in the saying “Blood is thicker than water,”‘ she explained.

‘The actual saying is “The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb,” which means that the connections with people you choose are more solid than the connections to the people you’re actually born to.’

On their friendship, Dakota went on: ‘I think because I grew up in [having a blended family], it’s come more naturally, but I wouldn’t have it any other way really. I really wouldn’t. I love it. It feels very honest. It feels really authentic…

‘No one’s hiding anything.’

On Monday, it was claimed Dakota and Chris quietly endured rocky patches in their relationship but are now back on track, sources told People magazine.

The couple, who have been together since 2017, are said to be ‘going strong’ as they each are busy with their individual careers.

The insider said: ‘They’ve had ups and downs, but now they’re definitely back on.’

Dakota recently premiered her HBO series Am I OK? She also premiered her latest feature Daddio at the Tribeca Film Festival on Monday.

Chris is currently on the tail end of his Music Of The Spheres Tour with Coldplay, which began in March 2022 and ends in November with multiple dates in New Zealand.

The last time the low-key power couple were seen together was in February during a loved up trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Then weeks later  it was claimed that the two are ‘engaged’ back in March.

It was said at the time the Coldplay singer proposed to the actress ‘a while ago’ and has the full blessing of his ex-wife and their children. 

The couple have kept their romance private since they first began their relationship six years ago.

A source told The Mirror in March: ‘The couple got engaged a while ago and have kept the news private. But now they are being open about it with their circles. 

‘They have been besotted with each other from day one so taking this next step was inevitable. 

‘They are in no rush to plan the wedding but are just enjoying making their commitment official.’ 

Dakota was also seen wearing an emerald green ring on her wedding finger at her 34th birthday in Los Angeles last October. 

MailOnline contacted Chris and Dakota’s representatives for comment at the time.

Chris and Dakota met through mutual friends and have ‘never really left each other’ since, the actress told Vanity Fair in June 2022.

They were first spotted together in 2017, the year after the musician’s divorce from Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth.

However, it was not initially clear if the couple were dating, or just close.

In June 2019, the pair had a wobble, rumoured to be a result of the Coldplay frontman pushing for them to have children.

This was a leap Dakota, in her professional prime, was reportedly not willing to take. However, before summer was up, they were back together.

They will be extra glad for that having seemingly got matching infinity sign tattoos in 2018.

Dakota recently said she loves Chris and Gwyneth’s two children ‘like my life depends on it’.

Now, Dakota is open to having children of her own.

She told Bustle: ‘I’m so open to that. I’ve gotten to this place where I really want to experience everything that life has to offer. And especially being a woman, I’m like, What a magical f*cking thing to do. 

‘What a crazy, magical, wild experience. If that’s meant to happen for me, I’m totally down for it. I’ve been really tripping out recently like, we’re not here for very long.

‘There’s so much to eat up and learn and grow from and experience and feel. That includes all the pain and the suffering and feeling so helpless about the world. Most days I feel like the most useless piece of sh*t.

‘I’m sitting in this dumb*ss chair, talking about this dumb*ss movie, and there are people in excruciating catastrophes, and what can I do? I do have that incredible friction in myself. 

‘And then I’m like, “We’re not here for very long, so if I’m meant to be a mother, bring it on”. ‘

The actress has been dating Coldplay frontman Chris since 2017 but watching him perform on stage never gets old.

‘I love watching him. I could watch him every day. I don’t know how to explain it. I feel like, I don’t know… I’m watching my most favorite being do his most favorite thing,’ she explained.

The couple have lived together in a multi-million Malibu beach-house for some years now.

The singer is into his surfing, and the actress likes to swim, making this a perfect location.

Dakota also enjoys whizzing around the area in a 1965 Mustang bought for her as a birthday present by her partner.

They support each other professionally, with Dakota appearing at Chris’ gigs, and Chris at Dakota’s premieres.

In June 2023, the vocalist even serenaded his girlfriend at his band’s visit to Naples.

They have even worked together once, with Dakota the director of Coldplay’s 2020 music video for the song Cry Cry Cry.
