‘Do not eat’ warning issued for popular fish recalled over food poisoning risk

The public has been advised not to eat certain batches a popular fish product that has been recalled due to food poisoning concerns.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland issued a recall notice for a number of Burren Smokehouse Hot Smoked Salmon products on Friday. Safety chiefs detected the presence of Listeria monocytogenes – a bacterium that causes food poisoning – in some batches of the item. This type of foodborne illness is known as listeriosis and can be particularly severe for pregnant women, newborns, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems.

The FSAI said: “Symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection can include mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications. Some people are more vulnerable to Listeria monocytogenes infections, including pregnant women, babies, and people with weakened immune systems, including the elderly. The incubation period (time between initial infection and first symptoms appearing) is on average 3 weeks but can range between 3 and 70 days.”

Burren Smokehouse products are sold in a number of retailers across Ireland, including some SuperValu and Dunnes Stores shops. Anywhere that sold the implicated batches has been asked to remove them from sale and display recall notices.

The FSAI continued: “Retailers are requested to remove the implicated products from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale. Wholesalers/distributors are requested to contact their affected customers and recall these products and provide a point-of-sale recall notice to their retailer customers. Caterers should not use the implicated batch.”

It added: “Consumers are advised not to eat the implicated products.”

The products affected by the recall are: Organic Hot smoked salmon Honey Lemon Pepper 140g, Organic Hot smoked salmon Honey Lemon Pepper 500g and Organic Hot smoked salmon Spiced 500g. They have the batch code 412421 and use-by dates from 04/06/24 to 24/06/24.
