Doireann Garrihy appears with the Minions at Bloom in first commercial appearance since announcing 2FM departure

Doireann Garrihy to leave 2FM breakfast show after five years on the station

Doireann Garrihy has made her first commercial appearance since announcing her departure from 2FM at the Bloom Festival in Phoenix Park.

Garrihy appeared alongside the Minions Kevin and Stuart at the festival’s Despicable Me 4 garden, where the yellow creatures will be available for photos across the weekend.

The garden was designed by Co Monaghan creative designer Benny Magennis, who has also designed past iterations of the Minions Garden at Bloom. Themes from the upcoming film are scattered throughout the garden and it promises to celebrate “all things Minion and yellow”.

After five years with RTÉ, Garrihy announced her departure from 2FM’s breakfast show with Donncha O’Callaghan and Carl Mullan, with her last show to come on May 31.

She said she planned to travel more and focus on her podcasts after departing 2FM, including Doireann and Friends. At the start of this week’s episode of the podcast, she spoke about leaving the station and thanked listeners for their support.

“I haven’t thought about what it’s going to be like not working with Donncha and Carl every day anymore,” she said.

“I don’t want to go there, because there’s nothing worse than a blubbering radio presenter so I’m going to try my best to hold it together on Friday.

“Thank you to anyone who’s listening, who’s been on the radio journey with me. I’m going to miss you so much, the listeners are what makes it.

“I’m getting emotional. The listeners are what makes it and I’m such a loser half crying on my own here. It’s been through thick and thin just the best experience.”

Garrihy is one of four presenters departing 2FM. Comedy duo the 2 Johnnies will present their final drivetime show with the station on May 31 while Jennifer Zamparelli has left the mid-morning slot and been replaced by Laura Fox.

Replacements for Garrihy and the 2 Johnnies have yet to be announced with an announcement expected soon from RTÉ on 2FM’s summer schedule.

“RTÉ 2FM will announce its summer schedule in the coming weeks. We look forward to bringing new talent to air over the coming months,” a spokesperson said.
